Long, long ago, the world that God had made so beautiful had become a very sad place. People everywhere had forgotten God, and they were unkind and cruel to one another. When God looked down, His heart was filled with sorrow. But there was one man who was different. His name was Noah, and Noah was righteous (that means he loved God and tried hard to do what was right, even when nobody else did).
God decided to wash the whole world clean and make a fresh start — but He would keep Noah and his family safe. So God said to Noah, "Build an ark (a giant wooden boat, as big as a huge ship)." God told him exactly how to make it: as long as a football field, with three floors, lots of little rooms, and one big door in the side. Noah had to cover it with pitch (a sticky, tar-like glue) so that not one drop of water could leak in.
Now here was the strange part — Noah did not live near the sea! There was no water big enough for such a boat. His neighbours pointed and laughed at him. But Noah trusted God. Bang, bang, bang! He picked up his hammer and began. For many, many years he sawed and built, and all the while he told everyone about God.
At last the ark was finished — and then something wonderful happened. The animals came! Two of every kind, a mummy and a daddy of each, marched right up the ramp. Lions and lambs, elephants and tiny mice, hopping rabbits and birds of every colour, padding and fluttering two by two. Noah gathered plenty of food for them all, and for his family too: his wife, his three sons, and their wives — eight people in all.
When everyone was safely inside, God Himself shut the big door. Then the sky turned dark, and the rain began. It poured and poured for forty days and forty nights, and deep underground springs of water burst open too. The water rose higher and higher until it covered even the tallest mountains. But the ark floated safely on top, rocking gently, with everyone warm and dry inside.
For many long months the ark drifted on the water. But God had not forgotten Noah — not for a single moment. God sent a wind, and slowly, slowly the water began to sink down. At last the ark came to rest on the top of a high mountain called Ararat.
Noah wanted to know if the ground was dry yet. First he sent out a raven (a big black bird). Then he sent a dove (a gentle little bird). But the dove could find nowhere to land, and it flew straight back. Noah waited seven days and sent the dove again. This time it came home in the evening with a fresh green olive leaf in its beak — so new plants were growing again, and new life had begun! Noah waited one more week and sent the dove a third time, and now it did not come back at all. The land was dry.
"Come out of the ark!" said God. So out they all came — Noah, his family, and every happy, stretching, blinking animal. The very first thing Noah did was build an altar (a special place made of stones for worshipping God), and there he thanked God for keeping them all safe.
Then God gave Noah a covenant (a forever-promise): never again would He flood the whole earth. And to seal His promise, God painted something breathtaking across the sky — a shining rainbow. "Whenever you see the rainbow," God said, "remember My promise. I will always love you and care for you."
The ark carried Noah's family safely through the storm to a brand-new beginning. Jesus is like our ark. When we trust Him, He carries us safely through everything — even death — into life that never ends. God's rescue plan that started with one boat finds its happy ending at the cross.
Noah waited a long time, but God never forgot him. When life feels stormy, you can hold on to this: God is faithful. He kept Noah safe, and He keeps you close too. The rainbow still reminds us that God's love does not give up.
I have put my rainbow in the clouds. It will be the sign of the agreement between me and the earth.
Dear God, thank You for keeping Noah safe, and for keeping me safe too. When I feel afraid, help me to trust You like Noah did. Thank You that You always keep Your promises. Amen.
