Ask, Seek, Knock Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God gives good gifts to his children.”
Jesus sat on a mountain. Many, many people listened to him. Jesus wanted them to know that they could talk to God about everything.
When you are hungry, what do you do? You ask! “May I have some bread, please?” And you get some. Jesus told the people about asking God. He used three little words: ask, seek, and knock.
Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given you.” Can you hold out your hands, like you are asking for something? God gives good gifts to his children.
Jesus said, “Seek, and you will find.” Seek means to look for something. Have you ever lost something? A toy, or a shoe? You look and look until you find it. That is seeking. Have you ever played hide-and-seek? You seek, and seek… and you find your friend! Can you put your hand over your eyes and look around?
Jesus said, “Knock, and it will be opened for you.” Long ago, houses had wooden doors. A friend knocked, and someone opened. Think of a visit to Grandma. Knock, knock! The door opens, and there she is! Can you knock on the door? Knock, knock, knock!
Let’s do all three together. Ask, one! Seek, two! Knock, three! You can ask God for help. You can ask him for the people you love. You can talk to him about anything.
Jesus said, “For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.” Everyone! Big people and little people. God gives good gifts to his children.
Then Jesus asked the people a question. “Who is there among you who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?” Think about it! In Jesus’ land, bread was often round and flat. A stone can look a little like round bread. But you can’t eat a stone! Crunch? Ouch! No!
Jesus asked again. “Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?” Fish was good food by the lake. A serpent is a snake. No dad would do that! A good dad gives good things to his children. God gives good gifts to his children.
Moms and dads are not perfect. Sometimes they do wrong things. But they still know how to give good gifts to their children. Jesus said that too.
Then Jesus said this. “How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” How much more? So much more! God knows what is good for us. And he loves to give it.
Our Father in heaven loves to give good things. Tonight you can ask him too, right before you sleep. God gives good gifts to his children.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What would you like to ask God for?
- What good gifts has God given you?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a line from each word to its hand motion.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find.” — Matthew 7:7 (Ask → hold out your open hands; it will be given you → close your hands like holding a gift; Seek → hand over your eyes, looking around; you will find → clap your hands)
Dear God, thank you that I can ask you for anything. Thank you for all your good gifts. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: God always loves to answer
Memory verse: “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.” — Matthew 7:7 · WEB
The Bible story
Jesus sat on a hillside and taught the crowd a happy little secret: keep asking, keep looking, keep knocking, because God loves to give good gifts.
Talk about it
- Jesus said, "Ask, and it will be…" what? — Given to you
- Who did Jesus say receives when they ask? — Everyone who asks
- What is the FIRST thing Jesus told people to do? — Ask
- Jesus said if you seek, what will happen? — You will find
- What did Jesus say happens when we knock? — The door will open
- If a child asked for bread, what would a good parent NOT give? — A cold stone
Where is Jesus in this story?
Jesus told us to knock, and He also said, “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved” (John 10:9). He is the open door into God's family. And Jesus promised that our Father gives the best gift of all, the Holy Spirit, to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13). When you knock, the One who opens is Jesus Himself.
What God wants to tell us
Jesus shows us that talking to God is not scary or hard. We only need to keep asking, keep looking and keep knocking, and God hears every single word. He is like the very best father, who loves to give His children good and loving gifts. Even when the answer takes a little while, we can trust that God is listening and He always knows exactly what we need.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You always hear me when I talk to You. Help me to keep asking, keep looking and keep knocking, and to trust that You love me and give me good gifts. Amen.
