1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “John pointed to Jesus.”
John baptized people in the Jordan River. Many people came to see him. One day some leaders came from Jerusalem. They asked him, “Who are you?”
John said, “I am not the Christ.” The Christ is the Savior God promised. “Are you Elijah?” they asked. “I am not,” said John. “Are you the prophet?” “No,” said John. Can you shake your head with John? No, no, no!
“Who are you?” they asked again. John said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness.” He called out, “Make straight the way of the Lord.” That means: Get ready, because the Lord is coming! It is like making a road smooth and straight for a king.
“Then why do you baptize?” they asked. John answered, “I baptize in water.” Then he said, “Among you stands one whom you don’t know.” Someone great was already there among them – and they did not know him!
John said, “He is the one who comes after me.” John said he was not even good enough to untie this man’s sandals.
The next day, John saw Jesus coming. John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Behold means look! Can you point like John? John pointed to Jesus.
A lamb is a little sheep. Baa! Long ago, God’s people gave lambs to God when they had done wrong. Sin means the wrong things people do. Jesus came to take them away – the wrong things of the whole world!
John said, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven.” Descending means coming down. A dove is a gentle bird. Can you flap your hands softly, like a dove coming down?
God had told John what to look for. The Spirit would come down on one man and stay on him. John said, “I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.” Testified means he told what he saw.
The next day, John was standing with two of his followers. Jesus walked by. John looked at him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” John pointed to Jesus.
The two men heard John. So they followed Jesus. Jesus turned around. “What are you looking for?” he asked. “Rabbi, where are you staying?” they said. Rabbi means Teacher.
Jesus said, “Come and see.” Can you wave your hand like this: come, come? So they came, and they stayed with Jesus that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.
One of the two was Andrew. First he went and found his brother Simon. “We have found the Messiah!” he said. Messiah means the same as Christ. And Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. It all started like this: John pointed to Jesus.
Jesus looked at Simon. He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas.” Cephas is the same name as Peter. And Peter means “rock”!
Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is God’s own Son, and he came for everyone. John pointed to Jesus.

Where is Jesus in this story?
John called Jesus the "Lamb of God" for a very special reason. Long ago, God's people would bring a gentle lamb as a gift to say sorry for their wrong choices. John was telling everyone that Jesus is God's own perfect Lamb, sent because He loves us so much. Jesus came to take away all our sins and to bring us close to God forever. Every time we hear these words, we remember that Jesus is God's greatest gift of rescuing love.
What God wants to tell us
John had one big job, and he did it with all his heart: he pointed people to Jesus. He did not want the glory for himself; he just wanted everyone to know how wonderful God's Son is. God shows us that we can be helpers too. When we are kind, honest, and loving, we help other people see how good God is. You do not have to be big or important to do something beautiful for God. Like John, you can simply point the way to Jesus.
Prayer
Thank You, God, for John, who happily pointed everyone to Jesus. Thank You for sending Jesus, the gentle Lamb, because You love me so much. Help me to be kind and to show others how good You are. I want to point the way to You, too. Amen.
