The World God Made Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God saw that it was good.”
In the beginning, God made the heavens and the earth. But the earth was empty. There were no trees and no flowers yet. There were no birds, no fish, and no people. Deep water covered everything, and it was dark. God’s Spirit was there, over the waters.
Then God spoke. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light! God saw that it was good. Can you say that with me? God called the light “day.” He called the dark “night.”
There was evening, and there was morning. That was day one. Hold up one finger!
On day two, God made the sky. He put it high above the waters, like a big roof over the world. When you look up, you see the sky God made. Hold up two fingers!
On day three, God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so! The water ran together into seas. Dry land came up out of the water. God called the dry land “earth.”
Then God made green things grow out of the ground. Soft grass. Plants with seeds. Tall trees full of fruit. God saw that it was good. Hold up three fingers!
On day four, God made two great lights. The big sun shines in the day. It keeps us warm. The moon shines at night. He made the stars too, so many stars! Can you twinkle your fingers like little stars?
God put them all in the sky to give light to the earth. God saw that it was good. Four fingers!
On day five, God filled the waters with fish. Little fish and big sea creatures. Splash! He made birds to fly across the sky. Flap, flap!
God blessed them. He said, “Be fruitful, and multiply.” That means: have lots of little ones and fill the world. God saw that it was good. Five fingers!
On day six, God made the animals of the land. Big ones and small ones. Animals that run, and animals that creep on the ground. Can you make an animal sound? Moo! Baa! God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let’s make man in our image.” That means people would be like God in a special way. God made the first man from the dust of the ground. He breathed into him the breath of life. Then God made a woman too.
God blessed them. He gave them plants and fruit for food. He gave them his whole world to take care of.
God looked at everything he had made. The light and the sky. The seas and the land. The plants and the trees. The sun, the moon, and the stars. The fish, the birds, and the animals. And the people. It was very good! Hold up six fingers!
On day seven, God rested from all his work. He blessed that day and made it holy – a special day for God. Seven fingers! Let’s count them all: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven!
Tonight, the moon and the stars are shining in the dark sky. God made them. And God made you too.
God saw that it was good.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- Which thing that God made do you like best, and why?
- How do you think God felt when he looked at everything he had made?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
God made two great lights. Color the sun and the moon. Then color 7 stars, one for each day.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“Let there be light” — Genesis 1:3 (Let there be → open both hands wide; light → spread your fingers like sunshine)
Dear God, thank you for the light, the sky, the animals, and the people. You made everything good. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: You were made on purpose, and made with love.
Memory verse: “God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” — Genesis 1:31 · WEB
The Bible story
Before there was anything at all, God was already there — and with a word and a smile, He made a whole wide world bursting with light, life, and love, just for you.
Talk about it
- On the very first day, what did God make? — Light
- How many days did God take to make the world? — Six
- What did God do on the seventh day? — Rested
- Who were the first two people God made? — Adam and Eve
- Where did Adam and Eve live? — The Garden of Eden
- What did God say about everything He made? — It was very good
Where is Jesus in this story?
Long before the first sunrise, Jesus was already there — for the Bible says that everything was made through Him. Jesus was there in the very beginning, making all things with God and for God. The same loving hands that flung the stars into the sky would one day stretch out on the cross to make us new again. So when you look at a bright morning or a tiny flower, you can whisper thank you to Jesus, the One who made it all and loves you most of all.
What God wants to tell us
God did not make the world by accident. He planned every star, every flower, and every animal — and then He made you, on purpose, because He wanted to love you. When you feel small, remember this: the great big God who made the whole universe knows your name and treasures you. You are His good and precious idea.
Prayer
Thank You, God, for making such a beautiful world — the sun, the sea, the animals, and me. Thank You that You made me on purpose and love me so much. Help me to care for Your wonderful world and to love You back with all my heart. Amen.
