2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Just vegetables and water!”
Daniel was a young man from Jerusalem. One day King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came with his army. He took Daniel far away to Babylon, to the king’s palace. Daniel’s three friends came too. The king also took some of the special cups and bowls from God’s house.
The king wanted the very best young men. They had to be strong, smart and good-looking. They would learn the language of Babylon and many new things. Then they would work for the king.
Back home, Daniel’s friends were called Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. But they got new names in Babylon. Daniel was called Belteshazzar. His friends were called Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Those are funny, long names! Let’s count the four friends on our fingers: Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego!
The four friends had to learn for three years. Every day the king sent them food from his own table. It was rich, fancy food, and wine to drink. It was the same food the king ate himself.
But Daniel decided in his heart not to eat the king’s food. He did not want to make himself unclean before God. Unclean means not right for God’s people.
God made the chief servant kind to Daniel. But the man was afraid. “What if you look worse than the other young men? The king will be angry with me!”
Daniel said, “Test your servants, I beg you, ten days. Let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.” Vegetables are foods like beans and carrots. Which vegetables do you like? Just vegetables and water!
“Then let our faces be examined before you,” Daniel said. Examined means looked at carefully. Daniel wanted the helper to look at the four friends. And he wanted him to look at the others who ate the king’s food. So the helper said yes. He tested them for ten days.
So for ten days, the four friends ate vegetables and drank water. Crunch, crunch! Let’s count the days! One, two, three, four, five. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten! Just vegetables and water!
After ten days, the helper looked at their faces. What do you think he saw?
The four friends looked healthier and better than all the others! They were even a little bit fatter! They had not eaten the king’s food at all. Just vegetables and water! Can you puff out your round cheeks?
So the helper took the king’s food away. He gave them vegetables. And God gave the four friends knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom. Daniel could even understand dreams.
After three years, they all came before the king. The king talked with them. He asked them many hard questions. There was no one like Daniel and his three friends! They were ten times better than all the wise men in his whole kingdom! So they got to work for the king. Daniel stayed there for many, many years.
God made Daniel and his friends wise and healthy, far away from home. Just vegetables and water!

The Bible story
Far from home in a shiny palace, a brave boy named Daniel must choose between the king's rich food and staying true to God. What will he decide?
Talk about it
- Where was Daniel taken to live? — The city of Babylon
- Why did the king want boys like Daniel in his palace? — To learn and serve him
- What special food did the king order the boys to eat? — The king's food and wine
- Why did Daniel not want to eat the king's food? — It would not honor God
- How did Daniel ask the guard about the food? — Gently and politely
- Why was the guard worried? — The king might be angry
Where is Jesus in this story?
Daniel decided not to defile himself, even far from home, because pleasing God mattered more than the king's rich food. Jesus once told his disciples, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me” (John 4:34). Jesus obeyed his Father perfectly, all the way to the cross, and he helps you stay faithful to God in the places where it is hard.
What God wants to tell us
Daniel was in a strange land, far from home, where it would have been easy to just do what everyone else was doing. Instead, he chose gently and bravely to stay faithful to God. We can be like Daniel. When we do the right thing with a kind and humble heart, God sees us and takes care of us. We do not have to be loud or unkind to stand up for what is right. God gives us courage, and He is always watching over us with love, wherever we are.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for being with Daniel far from home, and for being with me too. Please help me to be brave and gentle, and to do what is right even when it is hard. Thank You for always watching over me and loving me. Amen.
