Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God’s good hand was on them.”
Ezra was a scribe – a man who wrote and taught God’s law. He lived far away in Babylon. Babylon was a big city by a great river, very far from Jerusalem. Ezra had set his heart to seek the LORD’s law. He wanted to do it, and to teach it.
Ezra wanted to go to Jerusalem. He asked the king of Persia for help. And the king gave him everything he asked for! God’s good hand was on them.
Many people went with Ezra. There were priests and singers, moms and dads, and little children too. They carried lots of silver and gold. It was a gift for God’s house.
First they all came together by a river called Ahava. They camped there for three days. Ezra looked around. He needed more helpers for God’s house. So he sent men to find some. And they came – many good helpers! God’s good hand was on them.
But the way to Jerusalem was very long. There might be enemies and robbers on the road. Who would keep them safe? What do you think Ezra did?
Ezra could ask the king for soldiers and horses. But Ezra had already told the king something. “The hand of our God is on all those who seek him, for good.” So he did not ask for soldiers.
Instead, Ezra called everyone to fast. To fast means to stop eating for a while, to pray to God. They asked God for a safe way. They prayed for themselves, for their little ones, and for all their things. Can you fold your hands and pray, like them?
So they prayed and asked God. And God said yes!
Then Ezra chose twelve priests. He weighed the silver and gold and gave it to them. There were six hundred fifty heavy lumps of silver! There were a hundred heavy lumps of gold! There were twenty golden bowls. There were two bowls of shiny bronze, as precious as gold. Can you count to twelve, one for each priest?
“You are holy to the LORD, and the vessels are holy,” Ezra said. Vessels are bowls and cups. “Watch and keep them.” Holy means they belonged to God in a special way.
Then they set off from the river. Step, step, step. It was a long walk. It took about four months! Spring turned into summer. There were no cars and no trains. They went step by step. Can you march in place like Ezra’s people? God’s good hand was on them.
God kept them safe from enemies and robbers on the way. At last, they came to Jerusalem!
They rested there for three days. Let’s count: one, two, three!
On the fourth day, they weighed the silver and gold in God’s house. Everything was counted and weighed and written down. Everything was there. Not one bit was missing! Then they gave thanks to the God of Israel with many gifts.
God had heard their prayer and brought them safely there. God’s good hand was on them.

The Bible story
Ezra must lead God's people on a long, dangerous road home carrying treasure, but instead of asking for soldiers, he asks God to keep them safe.
Talk about it
- Who was the wise teacher in this story? — Ezra
- What was the name of Ezra's true home? — Jerusalem
- Where did Ezra gather the people together? — Beside the Ahava river
- What precious things did the people carry for God's temple? — Gold and silver
- Why did Ezra feel a little worried? — Robbers on the long road
- What could Ezra have asked the king for to guard them? — Soldiers and horsemen
Where is Jesus in this story?
Ezra's priests weighed every bit of silver and gold before the journey and again when they arrived, and nothing was missing (Ezra 8:25–34). Jesus keeps His people even more carefully. He said His Father's will is “that I shall lose none of all those he has given me” (John 6:39). If you belong to Jesus, He will bring you safely home.
What God wants to tell us
Ezra had a long, scary road ahead, but he did not put his trust in soldiers or horses. He put his trust in God, who is stronger and kinder than anything in the world. When we feel worried about something big, we can do just what Ezra did: stop, pray, and ask God to help. God loves to look after His children, and He is always watching over us, even on the longest journeys of our lives.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for always watching over me. When I feel worried or the road ahead looks long, help me to trust You like Ezra did. Please keep me safe and lead me the right way. I know You love me and never leave me. Amen.
