Jesus Feeds the 5000 Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Just five loaves and two fish!”
Jesus and his friends went across the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee is a big lake. On the other side, Jesus went up a hill. He sat down there with his friends. It was almost time for the Passover – a big feast of God’s people.
Then a great crowd came after him. So many, many people! They followed Jesus because they had seen him make sick people well.
Jesus looked up and saw all the people coming. They would need food. But this was a lonely place, with no food to buy.
Jesus asked his friend Philip. “Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?” Jesus already knew what he would do. He wanted to see what Philip would say.
Philip said, “Even lots of money could not buy enough bread. Everyone would get only a little bit.” Philip was thinking of two hundred silver coins. That was the pay for many months of work!
Then Andrew came. Andrew was Simon Peter’s brother. He said, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?” A boy! Maybe he was not much bigger than you. Loaves are little breads. Barley bread was simple bread, for poor people. Hold up five fingers for the loaves. Now hold up two for the fish. Just five loaves and two fish!
Five little loaves. Two little fish. And so many hungry people! What do you think Jesus will do?
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was a lot of grass in that place. So everyone sat down on the soft green grass. Can you sit down, like the people? Plop! There were about five thousand men! That is more than you can count.
Jesus took the loaves. He gave thanks to God. Then he gave the bread to his friends. His friends gave it to the people. Jesus did the same with the fish. Just five loaves and two fish!
The bread did not run out. The fish did not run out. Was there enough? Yes! Everyone ate as much as they wanted. Munch, munch! Everyone was full.
Then Jesus spoke to his friends. “Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost.” So they gathered them up. They filled twelve baskets! Let’s count the baskets: one, two, three … all the way to twelve!
Twelve full baskets of bread pieces! That was much more than they had at the start! And it all came from five little loaves. Just five loaves and two fish!
The people saw what Jesus did. “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world,” they said. A prophet speaks for God.
The people wanted to make Jesus their king. But Jesus went away, up the mountain, all by himself.
Jesus cared about all those hungry people. He fed them all, and there was more than enough. He knows what we need, too. Just five loaves and two fish!

Where is Jesus in this story?
Jesus took a little boy's small lunch and turned it into a feast for thousands — showing that He can give more than we could ever need. But Jesus fed something deeper than tummies. He is the Bread of Life; when we come to Him, He fills our hearts and gives us all we truly need. One day Jesus would give His whole self for us on the cross, so that we could be full of God's love forever — and that story finds its happy ending in Him.
What God wants to tell us
You might feel small, or think you only have a little to offer — just like that boy with his tiny lunch. But when you place what you have into Jesus' hands, He can do more than you ever imagined. Whatever you give with a happy heart — your time, your kindness, your sharing — Jesus can bless it and make it beautiful. You are never too little to be part of something wonderful.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for loving the big crowd and every child there — and for loving me too. Thank You that You can do amazing things with even a little bit. Please help me to share what I have with a happy heart, just like the boy did. Thank You that You are the Bread of Life and You always give me everything I truly need. Amen.
