Living Stones Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God is building a house of living stones.”
Peter was a friend of Jesus. Long before, Peter had been a fisherman. Jesus gave him the name Peter. Peter means “rock” or “stone.” What a good name for this story!
One day Peter wrote a letter. A faithful brother named Silvanus helped him. Mark was with Peter too. Peter called him “Mark, my son.”
The letter went to God’s people far from home. They lived in five different lands. Let’s count them on our fingers: one, two, three, four, five!
Peter told them to put away all lies and mean words, like taking off dirty clothes. Then Peter wrote, “As newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk.” A tiny baby wants milk, and drinks it all up! Milk helps a baby grow. Peter wanted them to want God like that. Can you pretend to be a baby drinking milk? Slurp!
Peter wrote that they had “tasted that the Lord is gracious.” Gracious means very kind. Mmm! God’s kindness is good.
Then Peter wrote about a building. A house is made of stones, one on top of another. But this house is very special. God is building a house of living stones.
Peter wrote that Jesus is “a living stone.” He was “rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.” Some people did not want Jesus. But God chose him. Precious means very, very dear.
Long ago God had said this in his book. “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious.” Zion is another name for Jerusalem. A cornerstone is the first and most important stone of the house. Every other stone is built on it. Jesus is the cornerstone!
God’s book also says this. “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.” The builders threw that stone away. But God made it the most important stone of all!
Then Peter wrote this. “You also as living stones are built up as a spiritual house.” Everyone who comes to Jesus is a living stone! Let’s build a tower with our fists, one on top of the other. Higher and higher! God is building a house of living stones.
A stone house is made of many stones. Big ones and small ones. Each stone has its place. And all of them rest on the cornerstone.
Peter wrote that they were “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” Royal means they belong to the great King. Priests are people who serve God. They were “a people for God’s own possession.” That means they belonged to God, like a treasure. God is building a house of living stones.
God “called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” Close your eyes. It is dark. Now open them. Light! Marvelous means wonderful.
Peter wrote that once they were not a people. But now they were God’s people! Once they had not known God’s mercy. But now they knew his mercy and kindness.
Jesus is the cornerstone. And every one of his people is a precious stone in God’s house. God is building a house of living stones.

Where is Jesus in this story?
Peter's letter points straight to Jesus. People threw Jesus away, but God chose Him as the cornerstone, the one who holds everything together. When Jesus gave His life and rose again, He opened His arms to gather us in. Because of His rescuing love, every one of us can become a living stone, joined to Him forever.
What God wants to tell us
In this little letter, God shows us that He never overlooks anyone. He looks at each of us, even the youngest and smallest, and says that we are wanted. Just as a builder needs every single stone, God wants you in His family. You are precious, you belong, and you are being built into something beautiful with Jesus right at the center.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for choosing me and loving me, even though I am small. Thank You that Jesus is the strong cornerstone who holds me safe. Help me remember that I belong to Your big, happy family, and that I am a living stone in Your house. Amen.
