A New Heaven and a New Earth Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God is making all things new!”
John, the friend of Jesus, was on the island of Patmos. There God showed him the most wonderful thing of all. John saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had passed away. God is making all things new!
John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem. It was coming down out of heaven from God. It was as beautiful as a bride on her wedding day.
A loud voice from heaven said, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people.” To dwell means to live. God will live right there with his people! God himself will be with them.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more. Neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more.” Mourning means being very sad. No more crying! No more ouch! Can you show me a big, happy smile?
God, who sits on the throne, said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Then God gave John a job. “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.” God is making all things new!
God said, “I will give freely to him who is thirsty.” He gives the water of life, from a fresh spring. Freely means as a gift. You don’t have to pay!
Then an angel carried John up to a great and high mountain. From there John could see the whole city, coming down from God.
The city shone with the glory of God. Its light was like a precious jewel, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates. At each gate stood an angel.
There were three gates on each side. Three to the east, three to the north. Three to the south, and three to the west. Can you point to all four sides? This way, that way, this way, that way!
Each gate was made of one big pearl! Let’s count the pearl gates! One, two, three, four, five, six. Seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve! God is making all things new!
The wall stood on twelve foundations, decorated with all kinds of precious stones. Blue sapphire. Green emerald. Golden topaz. Purple amethyst. And many more! The street of the city was pure gold, like clear glass.
John saw no temple in the city. A temple is a house for God. But this city did not need one. God himself and the Lamb are its temple. The Lamb is Jesus.
The city needs no sun and no moon. The glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. People from every land will walk in its light.
There will be no night there, and the gates will never be shut. Everyone whose name is written in the Lamb’s book of life will be there.
God will be with his people forever, and he will wipe away every tear. God is making all things new!
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What do you think God’s new city will look like?
- What do you think it will be like to never cry again?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Color the 12 pearl gates of God’s city.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes” — Revelation 21:4 (He will wipe away → gently wipe your cheeks; every tear → wiggle your fingers down like tears; from their eyes → point to your eyes and smile)
Dear God, thank you that you are making all things new. Thank you that one day you will wipe away every tear. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)

Talk about it
- Where was John living when God gave him this vision? — The island of Patmos
- What did God show John in this vision? — What will happen one day
- What did John see appear that was brand new? — A new heaven and earth
- What came down out of heaven from God? — The holy city
- The holy city was ready like a beautifully dressed...? — Bride

Where is Jesus in this story?
When Jesus rose from the dead on Easter morning, God's new creation began. Paul calls Jesus the “firstfruits,” the first part of a harvest that promises much more to come (1 Corinthians 15:20). So the risen Jesus is the proof that God really will make everything new (Revelation 21:5), including you and everyone who trusts him.
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that God has a wonderful plan for the future. One day He will make a brand new world with no more crying, no more hurting, and no more goodbyes. Best of all, God Himself will live right there with us, wiping away every tear like a loving parent. Even when today feels hard or sad, we can hold onto this happy hope: God is with us now, and something beautiful is waiting ahead.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for the wonderful new world You are making, where there will be no more tears or sadness. Thank You that You want to live with me and love me forever. Please help me trust You today and look forward to that happy day. Amen.
