Water into Wine at Cana Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Jesus made the water into wine.”
There was a wedding in the town of Cana. A wedding is a big party when two people get married. In those days, a wedding party went on for many days!
Jesus’ mother was there. Jesus was invited too, with his friends. Jesus’ friends had just started to follow him. Many guests came. They ate and drank and were glad together.
But at the party, the wine ran out! Wine is a drink made from grapes. Oh no! There was no more wine for the guests. That was a big problem for the family.
Mary told Jesus about the problem. She said to him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said, “My hour has not yet come.” That means: it is not yet my time.
But his mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.” Mary trusted Jesus.
Six big stone water pots stood there. They were heavy pots made of stone. People used the water to wash before eating. Each pot was very big. Each one could hold almost as much water as a bathtub! Six big pots! Let’s count them: one, two, three, four, five, six!
Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the water pots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. Up to the brim means all the way to the top. Glug, glug, glug! Can you pour pretend water? Pour, pour, pour!
That was a lot of water to carry! The servants went back and forth, again and again. Carry, carry, pour! Carry, carry, pour! At last all six pots were full.
Then Jesus spoke again. “Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast.” Draw out means to scoop some out. The ruler of the feast was the man in charge of the party. So they took it to him.
The man tasted it. Sip! The water had become wine! Not water anymore, but wine! Can you pretend to take a little sip? Jesus made the water into wine.
The man did not know where it came from. But the servants knew! Can you put your finger on your lips, like the servants who knew? Shh!
He called the bridegroom. The bridegroom is the man who got married. He said, “Everyone serves the good wine first. You have kept the good wine until now!” It was very good wine, the best! Maybe the bridegroom was surprised too! Jesus made the water into wine.
This was the first sign that Jesus did. A sign is a wonder that shows who Jesus is. Jesus did many more signs later. But this was the very first one, at a wedding in Cana.
Jesus showed his glory. Glory means how great and wonderful he is. His friends saw it with their own eyes. And his friends believed in him. Jesus made the water into wine.
Jesus helped at a wedding party, when the family needed it. He cares about big things and little things. Jesus made the water into wine.

Where is Jesus in this story?
This first miracle was like a bright signpost pointing to who Jesus really is: God's own Son, full of power and love. Just as He changed plain water into rich wine, Jesus can change sadness into joy and bring new life to anyone who trusts Him. He saved the very best for the wedding, and He saves His very best love for us.
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that Jesus cares about the little things in our lives, even a wedding party. Nothing is too small to bring to Him. When there was a problem, Jesus stepped in with kindness and power, giving something even better than before. We can trust Him with our worries too, knowing He loves us and delights in bringing joy to His friends.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus cares about big things and small things in my life. Help me to trust You when things go wrong, and thank You for the joy You bring. I love You. Amen.
