Jonah and the Big Fish
Jonah 1–2 · Tiny Bible Story for ages 2–4
God says to Jonah, “Go to Nineveh.” Nineveh is a big city. Point to Jonah!
But Jonah runs away. He gets on a big ship. Off goes the ship! Run, run, run!
God sends a big wind. Whoosh! The waves go up and down. Blow like the wind: whoosh!
Where is Jonah? Down in the ship, Jonah is fast asleep. Snore, snore! Snore like Jonah: zzz!
The men on the ship row and row. But the sea is too wild. Row, row, row your arms!
Splash! Jonah is in the sea. Then the sea is calm and still. Make a big splash!
God sends a big, big fish: gulp! Jonah is inside the fish. God keeps Jonah safe. Open your mouth wide: gulp!
Jonah is inside the fish for three days. One, two, three! Count with me: one, two, three!
Inside the fish, Jonah prays to God. God hears Jonah’s voice. Fold your hands like Jonah.
Jonah says thank you to God. Thank you, God! God keeps Jonah safe. Say it: thank you, God!
God speaks to the fish. Pop! Out comes Jonah on dry land! Pop! Jump out!
Jonah is safe on the dry land. God hears when Jonah prays. God keeps Jonah safe. Fold your hands and rest.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for hearing me when I pray. Amen.
For grown-ups: Make the wind loud and the fish gulp big, then get quiet for the prayer pages: the fish is God’s way to keep Jonah safe. Ask: “What does Jonah say to God?”
