Aaron’s Staff That Budded Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Twelve sticks, but God chose one.”
God’s people were grumbling again. They grumbled against Moses and Aaron. Some of them said, “Why do you lift yourselves up above the LORD’s assembly?” That means: why do you think you are more important than us?
Aaron was God’s priest. A priest serves God at his holy tent, for all the people. But who had God really chosen? The people were not sure.
God’s people came from twelve big families. Long ago, Jacob had twelve sons. Each son’s children and grandchildren became one big family. Aaron belonged to the family of Levi. The family of Levi helped Aaron at God’s tent.
So God told Moses a plan. Each of the twelve family leaders brought a rod. Rod is another word for a stick – a walking stick. Twelve sticks! Can you count to twelve with me? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve!
Each man’s name was written on his own stick. Aaron’s name was written on the stick for the family of Levi. God said, “The rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud.” To bud means to start to grow. Twelve sticks, but God chose one.
Moses put all the sticks in the Tent, in front of the LORD. That was the place where God met with Moses. They stayed there all night long. Dry old sticks, lying there. Nothing grows on a dry stick… or does it? What do you think happened?
The next day Moses went into the Tent. And look! Aaron’s stick had sprouted. It had buds. It had blossoms – pretty flowers! And it had ripe almonds – nuts you can eat! All in one night! Let’s say it together: sprout, bud, flower, nut!
Almond trees have pretty white or pink flowers. Buds, flowers, and nuts take a long time to grow – months and months! But this was not a tree. It was a dry stick! Only God could make that happen.
Can you be a little dry stick? Stand very still and stiff. Now slowly grow, and open your fingers like flowers!
Moses brought all the sticks out. Everybody looked. Each man took his own stick back. Eleven sticks were still dry. Only Aaron’s stick was blooming. Just one stick, full of flowers and nuts! God had chosen Aaron to be his priest. Twelve sticks, but God chose one.
The LORD said to Moses, “Put back the rod of Aaron before the covenant.” The covenant was God’s promise. It was written on the stone tablets in the golden box, the ark. So Aaron’s stick was kept in God’s tent. Twelve sticks, but God chose one.
It was a sign to remember. God wanted the grumbling to stop. Moses did just as the LORD told him.
Much later, the Bible tells us where Aaron’s rod was kept. It was inside the golden ark, together with the stone tablets.
God makes dry things grow and bloom. He chooses, and he takes care of his people. Twelve sticks, but God chose one.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What do you think the people said when they saw Aaron’s blooming stick?
- What would you like to see grow in just one night?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Color the 12 sticks. Then draw flowers on Aaron’s stick!
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“Had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds” — Numbers 17:8 (sprouted → push a fist up like a little plant; budded → make a closed bud with your fingers; produced blossoms → open your fingers wide; bore ripe almonds → pretend to pick a nut)
Dear God, thank you that you can make dry things grow. Thank you that you lead your people. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)

Where is Jesus in this story?
This story points us to Jesus. Just as God chose Aaron to be the people's priest, God sent Jesus to be our forever Priest, the One who brings us close to God. And just as a dead, dry stick burst into new life, Jesus rose from the grave, alive again, bringing new life to everyone who trusts in Him. God's rescuing love always turns what looks lifeless into something beautiful.
What God wants to tell us
Sometimes people argue because they are not sure who to trust. But God settled it in a clear way. He showed everyone the truth by making a dry stick burst into flower. God shows us today that He has a good plan, that He chooses wisely, and that we can trust Him even when things feel confusing. We do not need to worry or quarrel, because God is always kind, always faithful, and always in charge.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing Your people the truth in such a gentle way. When I feel worried or unsure, help me to trust that You have a good plan. Thank You that You are always faithful and that You love me every day. Amen.
