Abigail’s Wisdom Stops a Battle Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Abigail’s kind words made peace.”
A rich man named Nabal had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. But Nabal was grumpy, rude, and mean. His wife was named Abigail. She was wise and beautiful.
David and his men lived out in the wilderness. They helped Nabal’s shepherds. They kept them safe, day and night. Nothing was ever stolen from them.
Then came the time to cut the wool off the sheep. That was a busy, happy time, with lots of food. So David sent ten young men to Nabal. “Long life to you! Peace be to you!” they said. Can you wave and say, “Peace be to you”?
“Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and to David,” they said. They hoped for some food.
But Nabal said, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?” He would not share his bread, or his water, or his meat. He sent the young men away with nothing.
David was very angry. “Every man put on his sword!” he said. About four hundred men marched off with David toward Nabal’s house. Stomp, stomp, stomp! Can you stomp like David’s men?
One of Nabal’s servants went to tell Abigail. “David’s men were very good to us,” he said. “They were a wall to us both by night and by day.” That means they kept the shepherds safe, like a strong wall.
Abigail hurried. She packed two hundred loaves of bread. She packed five sheep, ready to cook. She packed one hundred bunches of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs. She loaded it all on donkeys. She sent her helpers on ahead. But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
Abigail rode down the mountain on her donkey. There was David with his men! Abigail got off her donkey quickly. She bowed down low before David, with her face to the ground. Can you bow down low like Abigail?
“On me, my lord, on me be the blame!” she said. “Please let your servant speak in your ears.” She gave David all the food for his men. Abigail’s kind words made peace.
“Please forgive the trespass of your servant,” said Abigail. A trespass is a wrong thing someone did. “The LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house.” She meant: God will make you king one day.
David listened. “Blessed is the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you today to meet me!” he said. “Blessed is your discretion.” Discretion means good sense. “Blessed are you, who have kept me today from avenging myself.” Avenging means hurting someone back. Abigail’s kind words made peace.
David took the food from Abigail. He said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your voice.” So there was no fight. David and his men turned back.
Later, Nabal died. Then Abigail became David’s wife. She rode to him on her donkey, with five helpers. Abigail’s kind words made peace.
The LORD had sent wise Abigail to David that day. A few kind words had stopped a big fight. God is a God of peace. Abigail’s kind words made peace.

Where is Jesus in this story?
Abigail fell at David's feet and said, “Pardon your servant” and asked that the blame be on her, even though the wrong was Nabal's (1 Samuel 25:24, 28). Jesus did something far bigger. He never did anything wrong, yet He carried the blame for our sins on the cross (1 Peter 2:24), so that we could have peace with God.
What God wants to tell us
Abigail shows us that gentle, wise words can calm even the angriest heart. When someone is unkind, we do not have to fight back or plan revenge. God is so pleased when we choose peace, listen carefully, and speak kindly to others. Just like Abigail, you can be a brave peacemaker who helps everyone feel calm, safe and loved.
Prayer
Loving God, thank You for wise Abigail, who chose peace instead of fighting. Please help me to use kind and gentle words, even when I feel upset. Make me a peacemaker like her, and help me to trust that You will take care of me. Amen.
