God Calls Abram Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “So Abram went, as the LORD had told him.”
Abram lived in a town called Haran. His wife was named Sarai. They had a home and many things. But they had no children.
Abram’s family had come to Haran from far away, from a city called Ur. His father Terah had brought them. Then Terah died in Haran. Now Abram, Sarai and Abram’s nephew Lot lived there.
One day the LORD spoke to Abram. “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house,” God said. “Go to the land that I will show you.” Relatives are your family – aunts, uncles and cousins. God did not tell Abram where the land was. Abram had to trust God.
God made Abram a big promise. “I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.” A nation is a very, very big family of people. But Abram did not have even one child yet!
God said even more. “All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” All the families! Your family too.
Abram was seventy-five years old. That is very old for a long trip! Can you count to seventy-five? That would take a long time! But Abram did not stay home. So Abram went, as the LORD had told him.
Abram packed up everything. His wife Sarai came too, and his nephew Lot. The people who worked for them came along. They took their animals and their tents, and everything they owned.
They walked and walked, a long, long way. Step, step, step. Can you walk in place like Abram? Day after day they walked, farther and farther from home. So Abram went, as the LORD had told him.
At last they came to the land of Canaan. Other people were already living there. They were called the Canaanites. Abram walked on until he came to a place called Shechem. There was a big oak tree there, called the oak of Moreh. An oak is a tall, strong tree.
There the LORD appeared to Abram. God said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” Offspring means your children, and their children, and their children.
Abram built an altar there. An altar is a pile of stones for worshiping God. Abram worshiped the LORD, who had appeared to him. Can you fold your hands like Abram?
Then Abram moved on to a mountain. He put up his tent there, between two towns called Bethel and Ai. A tent is a house made of cloth. He built another altar, and he called on the name of the LORD. That means he prayed to God. Let’s count Abram’s altars: one, two!
Then Abram traveled on, farther and farther south, into the new land. So Abram went, as the LORD had told him.
He did not know where the road would go. But God knew, and God was with him all the way.
The LORD showed Abram the land, just as he had promised. So Abram went, as the LORD had told him.

Where is Jesus in this story?
God's promise to bless every family on earth through Abram was a promise pointing all the way to Jesus. Many years later, Jesus was born into Abram's family, and through Him God's blessing reached the whole world. Just as Abram trusted God and followed, we can trust and follow Jesus, who leads us home to God's love.
What God wants to tell us
Abram did not know exactly where he was going, but he knew that God was good and would keep His word. When God asked him to step out and trust, Abram said yes. God shows us that we can follow Him even when we cannot see the whole path, because He walks beside us and always keeps His promises. Like Abram, we can trust God with our own little steps every day.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for loving Abram and for keeping Your promises. Help me to trust You and say yes, even when I cannot see what is ahead. Please walk beside me every day and lead me in Your good way. Amen.
