Abram and Lot Part Ways Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Abram chose peace, and God took care of him.”
Abram was a man who followed God. He traveled with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. A nephew is the son of your brother or sister. Lot was the son of Abram’s brother.
They had been far away, in the land of Egypt. Now they went back up out of Egypt, with everything they had.
Abram was very rich. He had many animals. He had silver and gold. Lot had many animals and tents too. Sheep and goats and cows – so many animals! Can you make the animal sounds? Baa! Moo!
They traveled to a place called Bethel. Abram had built an altar there before. An altar is a pile of stones where people worshiped God. There Abram called on the LORD’s name. That means he prayed to God.
But now there was a problem. There were too many animals! The land could not feed them all. There was not enough grass and water for so many sheep and cows.
Soon Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen began to quarrel. Herdsmen are the men who take care of the animals. To quarrel means to fight with words.
Abram did not want a fight. He said to Lot, “Please, let there be no strife between you and me. For we are relatives.” Strife means fighting. Relatives means family.
Abram said, “Isn’t the whole land before you? If you go to the left, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.” Can you point left and right? Left! Right!
Abram was the older one. But Abram let Lot choose first. Abram chose peace, and God took care of him.
Lot lifted up his eyes and looked all around. He saw the land by the Jordan River. It had water everywhere, like a garden. What do you think Lot chose?
Lot chose that land for himself. He moved his tents away to the east. So Abram and Lot went different ways. Abram stayed in the land of Canaan.
There was no more quarreling. Each one had enough room. Abram chose peace, and God took care of him.
Then the LORD spoke to Abram. “Now, lift up your eyes, and look northward and southward and eastward and westward.” Can you turn all around: north, south, east, and west?
God said, “I will give all the land which you see to you and to your offspring forever. I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth.” Offspring means children and grandchildren. Dust is the tiny bits of dirt on the ground. Can anyone count the dust? No! There would be more children in Abram’s family than anyone could count.
God said, “Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its width. I will give it to you.” Arise means get up. God wanted Abram to walk through the land, from one end to the other. Abram chose peace, and God took care of him.
So Abram moved his tent. He went to live by the big oak trees of Mamre. Oak trees are big, strong trees. There Abram built an altar to the LORD.
Abram gave Lot the first choice. And God gave Abram a great big promise. God keeps his promises. Abram chose peace, and God took care of him.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- How do you think Lot felt when Abram let him choose first?
- Why do you think Abram did not want to fight with Lot?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a line to who said it.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“Let there be no strife between you and me” — Genesis 13:8 (no strife → shake your head gently; between you and me → point to a friend, then to yourself)
Dear God, thank you that you take care of me. Help me to make peace with my family and friends. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: Choose Peace and Kindness
Memory verse: “Please, let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are relatives.” — Genesis 13:8 · WEB
The Bible story
When Abram and Lot's animals grow too many for one land, kind Abram lets Lot pick first — and learns that God blesses a peaceful, giving heart.
Talk about it
- Who traveled together with all their animals? — Abram and his nephew Lot
- What had God blessed Abram and Lot with? — Many flocks and herds
- Why did their herdsmen begin to argue? — Not enough land for both herds
- What did Abram want to stop between him and Lot? — Their quarreling
- What kind thing did Abram let Lot do? — Choose the land first
- When Lot looked around, which land did he choose? — The green Jordan Valley
Where is Jesus in this story?
Abram gave up his right to choose first, and God still promised him the whole land (Genesis 13:14–17). Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). And Jesus lived those words Himself: He didn't hold on to His rights as God's Son but gave Himself up to make peace for us (Philippians 2:6–8).
What God wants to tell us
Abram teaches us that being kind is far more important than getting our own way. Instead of fighting, he let Lot choose first and trusted God to look after him. When we share, forgive, and let others go first, we make peace instead of quarrels — and God sees our giving hearts and loves to bless them, just as He blessed Abram.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for showing me how to make peace like Abram. Help me to be kind and to share, even when I could choose first. Please help me trust You in every choice, knowing You always keep Your promises. Amen.
