Chariots of Fire — The Unseen Army Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God’s army was all around them.”
The king of Syria was fighting against Israel. He sat with his helpers and made secret plans. “My camp will be in such and such a place,” he said. A camp is where soldiers put up their tents.
But Elisha, the man of God, always knew the king’s secret plans. God showed them to him. Elisha sent a message to the king of Israel. “Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.” Beware means “Watch out!”
So the king of Israel stayed away from that place. And he stayed safe. Not once, not twice, but again and again!
The king of Syria was very upset. “Who of us is helping the king of Israel?” he asked. One of his helpers answered. “It is Elisha, the prophet. He tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”
Even the words the king whispered in his bedroom! Can you whisper a secret, very softly? Shh!
“Go and see where he is,” said the king. Soon they told him, “He is in Dothan.” Dothan was a little town on a hill.
So the king of Syria sent horses and chariots and a great army. A chariot is a cart for battle, pulled by horses. They came by night. They went all around the town.
Early in the morning, Elisha’s servant got up and went outside. Oh no! Soldiers everywhere! Horses and chariots all around the town! “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” he cried. Alas means “Oh no!”
Elisha answered, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” The servant saw only the enemy. But God’s army was all around them.
Elisha prayed, “LORD, please open his eyes, that he may see.” And the LORD opened the young man’s eyes. What do you think he saw?
Wow! The mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, all around Elisha! Can you open your eyes very wide, like the servant? God’s army was all around them.
The enemy soldiers came down to Elisha. Elisha prayed again. And God made them blind for a while. They could not find the way. Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me.”
So the soldiers followed Elisha. Step, step, step. Can you walk in place, like the soldiers? Elisha led them all the way to Samaria. Samaria was the big city of the king of Israel. Elisha walked in front of a whole enemy army. But he was safe. God’s army was all around them.
There Elisha prayed, “LORD, open these men’s eyes, that they may see.” The LORD opened their eyes. The soldiers looked around. They were right in the middle of Samaria!
The king of Israel asked, “Shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?” Elisha answered, “You shall not strike them. Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink.”
So the king made a great feast for them. The soldiers ate and drank. Then he sent them home to their master. After that, they stopped coming to attack the land of Israel.
The LORD watched over Elisha and his servant, day and night. Even when they could not see it, God’s army was all around them.

- What special job did Elisha have? — He was God's prophet
- Why was the king of Aram so cross with Elisha? — Elisha kept warning Israel
- What was the name of the little town where Elisha stayed? — Dothan
- What did the king send to surround the town at night? — An army with chariots
- How did the young servant feel when he saw the army? — Very scared
- What did the servant say to Elisha? — "Oh no, what shall we do?"
Where is Jesus in this story?
Just as God opened the servant's eyes to see he was never alone, Jesus came so that we could see God's rescuing love all around us. Jesus once said He could call thousands of angels to help Him, yet He chose to save us instead. He promises to be with us always, right to the very end, so we never have to face anything by ourselves. The same God who guarded that little town on the hill sent Jesus to be our forever friend and protector.
What God wants to tell us
Sometimes the world feels big and scary, and we feel small and alone, just like Elisha's young helper did. But this story shows us a beautiful secret: God is always near, watching over us with a love and power far bigger than anything that frightens us. Even when we cannot see Him, He is there, closer than the air we breathe. We do not have to be brave all by ourselves, because the God who filled those hills with light is holding us safe, every single day and every dark night.
Prayer
Thank You, God, that You are always with me, even when I cannot see You. When I feel scared or alone, help me remember the shining hills and Your mighty helpers all around. Please open my eyes to know that You are near, and fill my heart with peace instead of fear. I love You and I trust You. Amen.
