The Cloud and the Fire Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “When the cloud moved, they moved.”
God’s people were traveling through the wilderness. It was a big, dry land with no roads and no signs. How would they know which way to go?
God had a way. Since they left Egypt, God had gone before them in a cloud. Then God’s tent was set up. On that day, the cloud came down and covered it. In the evening the cloud looked like fire. It glowed all night long, until morning.
Every day, the cloud. Every night, the fire. It was always there. Can you wiggle your fingers up high, like a glowing fire in the night?
Every morning, the people looked. Is the cloud still there? Or is it moving? When the cloud lifted up from the tent, it was time to go. Everybody packed up. Pack, pack, pack! Then they knew what to do. Off they went, following the cloud. When the cloud moved, they moved.
When the cloud came down and stopped, God’s people stopped too. They set up their tents again.
Sometimes the cloud stayed just one night. In the morning it lifted up, and they traveled on. When the cloud moved, they moved.
Sometimes the cloud stayed two days. Sometimes a month. Sometimes a whole year! As long as the cloud stayed, the people stayed. Waiting is not always easy. But they waited for God.
They camped when the LORD said so. They traveled when the LORD said so. Let’s play! When I say, “Cloud up,” you march. When I say, “Cloud down,” you sit!
God also told Moses to make two trumpets of silver. The priests would blow them. When the people heard the trumpets, they knew it was time to go. At the first loud call, the families on the east side set out. At the second call, the families on the south side set out. Can you blow a pretend trumpet? Toot, toot!
Then one day, the cloud lifted up from God’s tent. It was the very first time. God’s people had camped at Mount Sinai for almost a whole year. Now they went on their way.
The ark of the LORD went ahead of them. The ark was the golden box with God’s words inside. It went ahead for three days, to find a resting place for them. And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day.
When the ark set out, Moses said, “Rise up, LORD!” When the ark stopped, Moses said, “Return, LORD, to the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel.” That means: come and stay with all your many, many people.
Day after day, night after night, the cloud and the fire stayed with them. If someone woke up in the dark, they could look out and see the fire glowing over God’s tent. When the cloud moved, they moved.
God did not leave his people alone in the wilderness. He showed them the way, and he found them places to rest.
God leads his people, by day and by night. When the cloud moved, they moved.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What do you think it was like to see a cloud of fire at night?
- How do you think the people felt when they had to wait a long time?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw God’s people following the cloud through the wilderness.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“At the commandment of the LORD they traveled” — Numbers 9:23 (the commandment of the LORD → point up high; they traveled → march in place)
Dear God, thank you that you lead your people. Thank you that you show me the way. Amen.

Where is Jesus in this story?
The cloud and the fire showed God's people that He was always with them and always leading them. Many years later, God sent Jesus, who said, "I am the light of the world." Just as the fire lit up the dark desert, Jesus lights up our path and leads us safely home to God. He is with us always, and He will never, ever leave us.
What God wants to tell us
God did not leave His children to wander alone in the desert. He stayed close every day and every night, showing them exactly where to go. God is just like that with you too. When life feels confusing, or you are not sure what to do, you can trust that God is right beside you, caring for you and leading you gently, one small step at a time.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for always staying close to me, just like the cloud and the fire stayed with Your people. When I do not know the way, please lead me and help me to trust You. Thank You that You never leave me, by day or by night. Amen.
