Comfort My People Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God comforts his people.”
God’s people were sad. They had turned away from God, and hard times had come. Some of them said, “My way is hidden from the LORD.” That means: God does not see me. But God had not forgotten them. He gave the prophet Isaiah a message for them.
“Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. To comfort means to help someone feel better. It is like a hug when you are sad. God comforts his people.
A voice called out, “Prepare the way of the LORD!” Every valley would go up. Every mountain would go down. Can you make a mountain with your arms, and then make it flat? A smooth road for God to come! Long ago, people made the road smooth when a king came to visit.
“The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God stands forever.” Flowers dry up. Grass turns brown. But God’s word stays forever and ever.
“Lift up your voice with strength! Lift it up! Don’t be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold, your God!’” Behold means look! Here is your God! God comforts his people.
Then Isaiah told them what God is like. “He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom.” That means close to his heart. “He will gently lead those who have their young.” He is gentle with the mommy sheep and their babies. He walks slowly with them, so they can keep up.
Can you hold a pretend little lamb and rock it gently? God comforts his people.
God is very, very great. He holds all the water of the sea in the hollow of his hand. He could weigh the mountains on a scale! Who taught God? Nobody! God knows everything.
God sits high above the round earth. From up there, people look as small as grasshoppers. He stretches out the sky like a curtain. He spreads it out like a tent.
“Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these.” Look up at the stars! God made every one. “He calls them all by name.” And not one star is missing. Tonight, every star in the sky is known to God by name.
“Haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? The everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint. He isn’t weary.” Weary means very tired. God never gets tired. God comforts his people.
Sometimes people get tired. Even big, strong boys get weary. But God helps them. “He gives power to the weak.”
“Those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles.” Can you spread your arms like eagle wings and fly?
“They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.” Run, run, run! Walk, walk, walk! And now, rest.
The everlasting God carries his lambs close to his heart. God comforts his people.

Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: God carries us close
Memory verse: “He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.” — Isaiah 40:11 · WEB
The Bible story
God's people felt tired and far from home, so God sent a gentle promise of comfort, whispering that He would carry them close like a shepherd carries little lambs.
Talk about it
- How were God's people feeling at the start of the story? — Sad, tired, and far from home
- What gentle words did God tell His prophet to say? — "Comfort my people"
- What was the prophet's job? — To bring God's message
- What did the voice in the desert say to do? — Prepare a road for God
- What would happen to the high mountains and deep valleys? — Made flat and smooth
- Isaiah said all people are like what? — Grass that dries up
Where is Jesus in this story?
Many years after this promise, Jesus came, and He called Himself the Good Shepherd who loves and cares for His sheep. The voice in the desert, crying "Get the road ready," pointed straight to John the Baptist, who told everyone that Jesus was coming. Just as God promised to carry His people gently home, Jesus gathers us in His arms today and never lets us go.
What God wants to tell us
When we feel tired, worried, or far from home, God does not stand far away. He comes close, just like a kind shepherd who scoops up the tiniest lamb and holds it near His heart. God never runs out of love or strength, and He never forgets even one of us. When we trust Him, He fills us up with fresh new strength, so we can keep going with hope. You are never too small for God to see, and never too weak for God to carry.
Prayer
Thank You, God, that You never get tired and You never forget me. When I feel small or sad, please hold me close like a gentle shepherd and give me new strength. Help me to trust You every day. Amen.
