1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Who is bigger than Goliath? God is!”
David was a shepherd boy. He took care of his father’s sheep in Bethlehem. His father’s name was Jesse. David had seven big brothers, and he was the youngest of them all.
His three oldest brothers were soldiers in King Saul’s army. And the army had a big problem.
The army of Israel stood on one mountain. The enemy army stood on another mountain. In between was a valley – low ground between two hills.
The problem was a giant named Goliath. He was much taller than any grown-up you know. He wore a bronze helmet and heavy armor. Bronze is a hard, shiny metal. His spear was big and heavy, like a thick wooden pole.
Every morning and every evening, Goliath came out and shouted. “Give me a man, that we may fight together!” He did this for forty days. King Saul and his soldiers were very afraid. Who is bigger than Goliath? God is!
One day Jesse sent David to the army camp with grain and bread for his brothers. David got up early in the morning. He left the sheep with a helper. And off he went!
At the camp, David ran to greet his brothers. Just then, Goliath came out and shouted again. The soldiers saw him and ran away. They were terrified. “He is making fun of the army of the living God!” David said.
David’s oldest brother, Eliab, heard him. Eliab got angry. “Why have you come down?” he said. “What have I now done?” said David.
Then David went to King Saul. “I will go and fight him,” he said. “You are only a boy,” said Saul.
But David told the king about his sheep. Sometimes a lion or a bear came and took a lamb. David went after it and saved the lamb from its mouth. David said, “The LORD saved me from the lion and the bear. He will save me from this giant too.” Saul said, “Go! The LORD will be with you.” Who is bigger than Goliath? God is!
King Saul put his own armor on David. A helmet on his head. A heavy coat on his body. Clank, clank! David tried to walk. Can you walk stiff and slow, like David in the big armor? “I can’t go with these,” he said. So he took them off.
David took his shepherd’s stick. He went to the brook – a little stream. He picked five smooth stones. Let’s count them: one, two, three, four, five! He put them in his shepherd’s bag. In his hand he had his sling – a strap for throwing stones.
Goliath came closer. A man walked in front of him, carrying his big shield. Goliath looked at David and made fun of him. “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” he shouted. But David stood tall. Can you stand tall like David?
David called out, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear. But I come to you in the name of the LORD! The battle is the LORD’s.” Who is bigger than Goliath? God is!
David ran toward the giant. He put a stone in his sling. Whoosh! The stone hit Goliath on the forehead. The giant fell down on his face. Thump! The fight was over. The enemy soldiers ran away. The men of Israel shouted loud.
The LORD saved his people that day. Who is bigger than Goliath? God is!
Then King Saul asked David, “Whose son are you?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse.” He was the shepherd boy from Bethlehem.
David was only a boy, but the LORD was with him. And the LORD is with you too, all night long. Who is bigger than Goliath? God is!

Talk about it
- What was David's job before he was king? — A shepherd

Where is Jesus in this story?
When Goliath shouted his challenge, the whole army of Israel was too afraid to move, so David went out and fought for all of them. Jesus, called the Son of David (Matthew 1:1), did the same for us in a much bigger way. He faced sin and death, enemies we could never beat ourselves, and won through His cross and rising again (Hebrews 2:14–15).
What God wants to tell us
David was only a shepherd boy, but he trusted God, and God made him braver than the biggest giant. You do not have to be the tallest, the strongest, or the oldest for God to use you. When something in your life feels like a giant, you can remember David: hold God's hand, be brave, and watch what He can do through someone small who trusts Him.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for the story of little David and his big, brave heart. When I feel small and my problems feel like giants, help me to trust You just like David did. Thank You that the battle belongs to You, and that You are always right beside me. Amen.
