1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God’s promise lasts forever and ever.”
King David lived in a beautiful house made of cedar wood. God had given him rest from all his enemies. There was peace all around his kingdom. No more fighting!
But God’s ark was still in a tent. David spoke to Nathan the prophet. “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar,” he said. “But God’s ark dwells within curtains.” Dwell means live. The curtains were the walls of the tent. David wanted to build a house for God.
“Go, do all that is in your heart,” said Nathan. “For the LORD is with you.”
But that same night, the LORD spoke to Nathan. “Go and tell my servant David,” said the LORD. “Should you build me a house for me to dwell in?”
“I have not lived in a house,” said the LORD. “I have moved around in a tent.” Ever since he brought his people out of Egypt, God had gone with them everywhere. Can you make a tent with your arms over your head?
God said, “I took you from the sheep pen, to be prince over my people.” Baa, baa! David had been a shepherd boy. Now he was king! “I have been with you wherever you went.”
And the LORD promised more. “I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them.” God would plant his people like a tree in good ground. There they could grow and stay safe.
Then God made a surprise promise. David wanted to build God a house. But God would build David a house! “The LORD will make you a house,” God said. This house was not made of wood. It was David’s family – his children, and their children, and their children. God’s promise lasts forever and ever.
“I will set up your offspring after you,” said the LORD. Offspring means children. “He will build a house for my name.” Later, David’s son Solomon built God a beautiful house.
“Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever,” God said. “Your throne will be established forever.” A throne is a king’s chair. Forever means it will never, ever end. God’s promise lasts forever and ever.
Nathan told David all these words. Then David went in and sat before the LORD. He prayed, “Who am I, Lord GOD, and what is my house?” God had brought him so far! Can you fold your hands and pray like David?
David said, “You are great, LORD God. For there is no one like you.” And David said, “You are God, and your words are truth.” God’s promise lasts forever and ever.
Many, many years later, a baby was born in David’s family. His name was Jesus! An angel said this about him. “The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”
Jesus is the King who will reign forever. God keeps his promises, every one. And he keeps you safe all night long. God’s promise lasts forever and ever.
