Eutychus Falls Asleep in the Window Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Eutychus was alive again!”
Paul and his friends sailed across the sea. After five days they came to a town by the sea called Troas. Some of Paul’s friends had gone ahead. They were waiting there for him. There were seven of them! Can you hold up seven fingers? They all stayed in Troas for seven days.
On the first day of the week, the friends of Jesus met together. They met in an upper room, high up on the third floor of a house. Let’s count the floors: one, two, three!
They came to break bread and eat together. Paul was there too. He was going to leave the next day. So he had a lot to say. The man who wrote this story was there too. He saw it all.
It got dark outside. Many lamps were shining in the upper room. Flicker, flicker went the little flames. Can you wiggle your fingers like little flames?
Paul talked and talked. He had so much to tell them! Tick, tock. The night got later and later. Paul talked until midnight. Midnight is twelve o’clock, in the middle of the night. Most children are fast asleep at midnight.
A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window. He got sleepy. Very, very sleepy. His eyes got heavy. Can you give a big yawn? Paul kept on talking. And Eutychus fell into a deep sleep.
Oh no! Eutychus fell out of the window. He fell all the way down from the third floor. The people hurried down the stairs. They picked him up. He was dead.
Paul went down too. He lay down on the young man and put his arms around him. Then Paul said, “Don’t be troubled, for his life is in him.” That means: don’t be afraid, he is alive! Eutychus was alive again!
What a night! Then Paul went back upstairs. They broke the bread and ate together.
And then? Paul talked with them some more. He talked for a long, long time. He talked until the sun came up! The dark night was over. A new day had come. Eutychus was alive again!
In the morning, Paul said goodbye. He went on his way to the next town.
And the friends brought Eutychus in. He was alive and well! They were greatly comforted. That means their sad and scared hearts felt much, much better.
Maybe they hugged him tight. Maybe they thanked God again and again. The Bible does not tell us. But we know their hearts were glad. Eutychus was alive again!
The friends in Troas had seen God’s great power that night. God had been with them in the upper room. He had been with them down below, where Eutychus fell. And he was with them when the sun came up.
God gave the young man back his life. And God watches over you too, all through the night. Eutychus was alive again!
3. Talk together (3 min)
- How do you think the friends felt when they saw Eutychus fall?
- What do you think Eutychus said when he woke up?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw the upper room with many lamps shining, and Eutychus by the window.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“They brought the boy in alive, and were greatly comforted” — Acts 20:12 (They brought the boy in → wave someone toward you; alive → jump up; greatly comforted → give yourself a big hug)
Dear God, thank you that you gave Eutychus his life again. Thank you that you comfort us when we are sad. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: God is close when we fall
Memory verse: “They brought the boy in alive, and were greatly comforted.” — Acts 20:12 · WEB
The Bible story
One warm night, a sleepy boy named Eutychus tumbles from a tall window while Paul is teaching — but God's love has a wonderful, joyful surprise waiting!
Talk about it
- On which day did Jesus' friends come together? — The first day of the week
- Who was the kind teacher visiting the friends? — Paul
- What gave the upstairs room its warm, soft glow? — Many little oil lamps
- What was the young man's name? — Eutychus
- Where was Eutychus sitting? — In the window
- How long did Paul keep talking before Eutychus fell? — Until midnight
Where is Jesus in this story?
When Paul threw his arms around Eutychus he said, “Don't be alarmed. He's alive!” (Acts 20:10). It sounds like Jesus at Jairus' house, who said, “The child is not dead but asleep,” and then raised her (Mark 5:39–42). The believers had met on the first day of the week, the day Jesus rose, and His power over death was still at work.
What God wants to tell us
This gentle story reminds us that God never leaves us, even on our sleepiest and most surprising days. When Eutychus fell, God was right there, full of love and power, ready to help. Whenever something goes wrong for us, we can remember that God cares about every single person, watches over us in the dark, and loves to turn our worried moments into happy, hope-filled ones.
Prayer
Thank You, God, for staying close to me all day and all night. Thank You that You are strong and full of love, even when things go wrong. Please help me to trust You, and comfort me when I feel worried. I am so glad that You care about me. Amen.
