Faith That Gets to Work Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Faith and helping hands go together.”
James was a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus. He wrote a letter to friends of Jesus. They lived far apart, in many lands. Many Bible teachers think this James was a brother of Jesus. But James did not say, “I am important.” He called himself a servant – God’s helper.
James wanted God’s people to be fair to everyone. He wrote that they should not show “partiality.” Partiality means picking favorites. So he told them a little picture-story. Let’s listen.
Imagine a rich man with a gold ring and fine clothes. He comes to the meeting. People tell him, “Sit here in a good place.” Then a poor man comes in, in dirty clothes. They tell him, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool.” That means: sit on the floor, down by my feet.
Is that fair? No! That is not right, James said. God does not love the rich man more. James asked a question. “Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith?” Rich in faith means full of trust in God.
James reminded them of God’s royal law: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” It is called royal, because it comes from God, the great King.
Then James wrote, “Mercy triumphs over judgment.” Mercy means being kind to someone, even when they do not deserve it. Mercy wins!
Then James told another picture-story. Imagine a brother or sister who is cold. They have no warm clothes. They have no food to eat today. Brrr! Can you shiver like you are cold? What do you think they need?
Someone says to them, “Go in peace. Be warmed and filled.” But he gives them nothing. No coat. No bread. Nothing at all. “What good is it?” James asked.
Kind words are good. But this person is still cold and hungry! James wrote, “Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.” Works means the good things we do. Faith and helping hands go together.
James also wrote, “I will show you my faith by my works.” Let’s show our helping hands! Pretend to give someone a warm coat. Now give them some bread!
Then James told about Abraham. “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness.” That means God counted Abraham as right with him. Abraham trusted God, and he did what God said. And he was called the friend of God. Faith and helping hands go together.
James told about Rahab too. Rahab trusted God. She welcomed God’s messengers into her house. Then she helped them get away safely, by another way. Can you point the way, like Rahab?
Real faith is a bit like a living tree. A living tree grows leaves and fruit. Real faith grows good works. Faith and helping hands go together.
God sees every person, rich or poor. And he loves each one with all his heart. Faith and helping hands go together.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- How do you think the cold, hungry person felt when nobody helped?
- Who could you help with your hands this week?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a warm coat and some bread for someone who is cold and hungry.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“I will show you my faith by my works” — James 2:18 (I will show you → point to your eyes; my faith → hands on your heart; by my works → hold out your helping hands)
Dear God, thank you for my food and my warm clothes. Please show me someone I can help. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: Love shows up in what we do
Memory verse: “Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.” — James 2:17 · WEB
The Bible story
James teaches that real faith is like a helping hand — it doesn't just say kind words, it gets busy showing God's love to everyone who needs it.
Talk about it
- Who wrote the letter in this story? — James
- What did James want to teach his friends about? — Faith and good deeds
- In James's example, what did the person in need lack? — Clothes and food
- What did James say kind words alone are like? — Not enough to help
- James said not to treat rich people better than...? — Poor people
- What did James say faith without good deeds is like? — A body without breath
Where is Jesus in this story?
James grew up in the same family as Jesus, but at first he did not believe in Him (John 7:5). After Jesus rose, He appeared to James (1 Corinthians 15:7), and James was changed. His letter echoes Jesus' words, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” (Matthew 25:35). Faith in Jesus shows itself by caring for others, just as Jesus did.
What God wants to tell us
God shows us that believing in Him is meant to fill our hearts and then spill out into kind actions. When we love God, we do not only say nice words — we share, we help, and we care for people who are sad, hungry or lonely. Every little helping hand, every shared snack, and every gentle hug is faith coming alive. God is so happy when our love turns into doing good, because that is how the whole world gets to feel His warmth through us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me so warmly. Help my heart to believe in You and my hands to help others. Show me someone I can be kind to today, so Your love can shine through me. Amen.
