The Fall — The Day Everything Changed Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God did not forget them.”
God planted a beautiful garden in a place called Eden. He put the man there to take care of it. God made every kind of tree grow in the garden. The trees were pretty to look at, and good for food.
God spoke to the man. “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden. You shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” That tree was in the middle of the garden. Then God made a wife for the man. They lived in the garden together.
One day a serpent came to the woman. A serpent is a snake. This snake was very tricky. “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree’?” it asked.
The woman said, “We may eat fruit from the trees. But not from the tree in the middle of the garden. God said we would die if we ate from it.” The snake said, “You won’t really die. You will be like God.”
The woman looked at the tree. The fruit looked good to eat. It was pretty, too. So she took some, and she ate it. She gave some to her husband, and he ate it too.
They had not listened to God. That is called sin. Sin is when we do wrong things that make God sad.
Then everything changed. They knew they had no clothes on. They sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. Can you pretend to sew with a needle? In and out, in and out.
In the cool of the day, they heard God walking in the garden. The cool of the day is when the hot sun is going down. The man and his wife hid among the trees. Can you hide your face behind your hands?
God called to the man, “Where are you?” Let’s say it softly together: “Where are you?” God did not forget them.
“I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid,” the man said. “So I hid.” Then God asked a question. “Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said the woman gave him the fruit.
The LORD God said to the woman, “What have you done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me.” Deceived means tricked.
God said the snake would crawl on its belly. And God made a promise. He said to the snake, “He will bruise your head.” One day a child from the woman’s family would win over the snake. God did not forget them.
Now life would be hard. There would be thorns and hard work. One day people would die and go back to the dust.
The man gave his wife a name. He called her Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living. That means: all people would come from her family.
The LORD God made clothes from animal skins. He dressed Adam and Eve himself. God did not forget them.
Then God sent them out of the garden. They could not live there anymore. Now Adam would work the ground outside the garden.
But God had made a promise, and God keeps his promises. God did not forget them.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- How do you think Adam and his wife felt when they hid among the trees?
- Why do you think God came looking for them in the garden?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a line to who said it.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“Where are you?” — Genesis 3:9 (Where → hand over your eyes and look around; are you → point to someone you love)
Dear God, thank you that you come looking for us. Thank you that you forgive us when we do wrong. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: God loves us even when we get it wrong
Memory verse: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 · WEB
The Bible story
In a beautiful garden, Adam and Eve had everything they needed—until a sneaky serpent whispered a question that would change the whole world forever.
Talk about it
- Where did Adam and Eve live at the start of the story? — In the garden of Eden
- How many trees did God tell them not to eat from? — Just one
- Which tree were they told not to eat from? — Tree of knowledge of good and evil
- Which animal came to trick Eve? — A sneaky serpent
- What did the serpent try to make Eve doubt? — What God had said
- What did the serpent say the fruit would make Eve? — Wise like God
Where is Jesus in this story?
This sad day was not the end of the story. When God promised that someone would one day crush the serpent's power, he was pointing all the way forward to Jesus. Many years later, Jesus came to earth, loved us perfectly, and defeated sin and death forever. Because of him, everyone can be friends with God again and one day come home to a place even more wonderful than the garden of Eden.
What God wants to tell us
Adam and Eve listened to a tricky voice instead of trusting God, and it made everything harder. But even after their mistake, God did not stop loving them. He came looking for them, he covered them, and he promised to make things right. God shows us that our wrong choices are real, yet his love is bigger. When we make mistakes, we never have to hide—we can run to God, tell him the truth, and trust that he is already planning to help us.
Prayer
Loving God, thank you that you love me even when I make mistakes. Help me to be honest and to trust you instead of listening to tricky voices. Thank you for sending Jesus to make everything right again. Amen.
