Feeding the Four Thousand Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Seven loaves and a few small fish.”
Jesus came to the Sea of Galilee. That is a big lake with hills all around. Jesus went up on a mountain there, and he sat down.
Then the people came. Big crowds came to him! They brought many sick people with them. Some could not walk. Some could not see. Some could not talk. Some had hurt hands or feet.
The people put the sick ones down at Jesus’ feet. And Jesus healed them. He made them well, one by one.
Now the people who could not talk were talking! The people who could not walk were walking! The people who could not see were seeing! The crowd was amazed. They praised the God of Israel.
The people stayed with Jesus for three whole days. One day, two days, three days! By now their food was all gone.
Jesus called his friends, his disciples. Disciples are the ones who follow Jesus and learn from him. He said, “I have compassion on the multitude. They have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat.” Compassion means Jesus felt sorry for them and wanted to help. A multitude is a very big crowd.
Jesus said, “I don’t want to send them away fasting. They might faint on the way.” Fasting means going without food. Faint means falling down because you are so weak.
They were far out in a lonely place. There were no towns there, and no shops. They said, “Where could we get so many loaves out here?” Loaves are breads. Bread and fish were everyday food in that land.
Jesus asked, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” Can you hold up seven fingers? Seven loaves and a few small fish.
That was not much food for so many people. What do you think Jesus did?
Jesus told the people to sit down on the ground. So everyone sat down. Can you sit down nice and still, like the people?
Jesus took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks to God. He broke the bread into pieces. He gave the pieces to his friends. And his friends gave the food to all the people. Seven loaves and a few small fish.
Everyone ate. Munch, munch, munch! They all ate until they were full. Nobody was hungry anymore. The bread was enough. The fish were enough. And there was even some left over!
Then the friends picked up the pieces that were left. They filled seven baskets full of broken pieces! Let’s count the baskets: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Seven loaves and a few small fish.
Four thousand men ate that day, and women and children too. That is more people than we could ever count!
Then Jesus sent the people home. He got into a boat and went to a place called Magdala.
Jesus saw that the people were hungry, and he cared. He gave more than enough for everyone. Seven loaves and a few small fish.

Where is Jesus in this story?
Later, when the disciples worried about having no bread, Jesus reminded them of this very day: “the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered” (Matthew 16:10). He wanted them to trust Him. Jesus also said He is the bread of life (John 6:35). The One who filled seven baskets will not forget what you need.
What God wants to tell us
Jesus did not only teach the people; He noticed that they were hungry and tired, and He wanted to help. This story shows us that God cares about our everyday needs, even something as simple as a meal. When we bring Him what little we have, He can do far more with it than we ever imagined. You never have to feel too small or forgotten, because the God who fed thousands on a hillside is watching over you with the very same love today.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for caring about me, even the little things like being hungry or tired. Thank You that Your love never runs out. Please help me to share what I have with others, and to trust You to look after me every day. Amen.
