Freed by an Angel — and Gamaliel’s Advice Preschool Lesson

Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Nobody could stop the good news!”
The apostles were in Jerusalem. They met at a place in the temple called Solomon’s Porch. More and more people believed in Jesus – lots of men and women!
The apostles did many wonders among the people. Sick people were carried into the streets on beds and mats. Some hoped Peter’s shadow would fall on them as he walked by. People came from the towns all around, too. And the sick people were all healed.
Can you make a shadow with your hand? Wiggle it on the wall!
But the high priest and his friends were jealous. Jealous means upset that others are liked more. They put the apostles in prison. Clang! The door was locked.
But in the night, an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors. Creak! He brought them out and said, “Go stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.” That means the good news about Jesus, who gives life. Nobody could stop the good news!
So at daybreak, when the sun came up, the apostles went to the temple. They taught the people about Jesus.
The leaders sent officers to the prison to bring the apostles. The officers came back. “We found the prison shut and locked. The guards were standing before the doors. But when we opened them, we found no one inside!” Can you make a surprised face?
The leaders did not know what to think. Then someone came and said, “The men are in the temple, teaching the people!” Nobody could stop the good news!
So the captain went and brought the apostles back. He did not hurt them, because he was afraid of the people.
The high priest said, “Didn’t we strictly command you not to teach in this name?” Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” Nobody could stop the good news!
They said, “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus.” They said that God made Jesus a Prince and a Savior, to forgive sins.
The leaders were very angry. But a wise teacher stood up. His name was Gamaliel. All the people respected him. He told the guards to take the apostles outside for a little while.
Gamaliel told the leaders about other men from before. They had started big groups too. But those groups came to nothing.
Gamaliel said, “Leave them alone. For if this counsel or this work is of men, it will be overthrown. But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it.” Overthrow means to stop it. He said they might even be fighting against God!
The leaders agreed with him. They punished the apostles. They told them again not to speak about Jesus. Then they let them go.
But the apostles went away full of joy. They were glad to suffer for Jesus’ name. Every day, in the temple and at home, they kept on teaching about Jesus.
This work was from God, and God was with them. Nobody could stop the good news!

Talk about it
- What were the friends of Jesus doing in Jerusalem? — Teaching and healing the sick
- How did some of the leaders feel about the apostles? — Jealous and angry
- What did the leaders do to Peter and his friends? — Put them in prison
- Who opened the prison doors in the night? — An angel of the Lord

Where is Jesus in this story?
Jesus had told his friends that they would be blessed when people insulted and hurt them because of him, and that they should be glad (Matthew 5:11–12). That sounded strange until it happened. After being whipped, the apostles left the council rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer for Jesus' name (Acts 5:41). Jesus' words held them up, and nothing could stop his good news.
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that God is stronger than any locked door or any worried leader. When we choose to follow him and share his love, he fills us with courage, just like the apostles. Even when things feel hard, God is always at work behind the scenes, and his good news of Jesus can never be stopped. We can trust him and be brave, knowing he is right beside us all the time.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for keeping your friends safe and opening the prison doors. Please make me brave like the apostles, so I can share your love with everyone I meet. Thank you that nothing can ever stop your good news. Amen.
