2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God knows you, and God is with you.”
King David wrote many songs to God. Long before he was king, he was a shepherd boy. In one song, David thought about how well God knows him. It is Psalm 139. Let’s listen to what David sang.
“LORD, you have searched me, and you know me.” God knows David all the way through. And God knows you too! God knows you, and God is with you.
“You know my sitting down and my rising up.” Can you sit down? Now stand up! God sees when you sit and when you stand.
“You perceive my thoughts from afar.” Perceive means to see and to know. God knows what you think, even from far away.
“You search out my path and my lying down.” God sees where you walk all day. And God sees you when you lie down in bed at night.
“There is not a word on my tongue, but, LORD, you know it.” Even before you say a word, God knows it.
“You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me.” God is all around you, in front and behind, like a big hug. Can you give yourself a big hug? God knows you, and God is with you.
“Where could I go from your Spirit?” David asked. What if he went up high into the sky? “If I ascend up into heaven, you are there.”
What if he flew away on the wings of the dawn, far over the sea? Can you flap your arms like wings? “Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.”
What about the dark night? “Even the darkness doesn’t hide from you. The night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.” God sees you in the dark too. God knows you, and God is with you.
Then David thought about how God made him. “You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” A womb is the place inside a mommy where a baby grows. Before David was born, God was making him, stitch by stitch.
“I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful.” God made your eyes and your nose. God made your fingers and your toes. Can you wiggle your fingers and your toes? You are wonderfully made!
“Your eyes saw my body.” God saw you before anyone else did. God knew all your days, even before you were born.
“How precious to me are your thoughts, God!” David said God’s thoughts are more than all the sand. Think of all the sand on the beach! Nobody can count it all. God knows you, and God is with you.
Then David sang, “When I wake up, I am still with you.” When you go to sleep tonight, God is with you. And when you wake up in the morning, God is still with you.
Every day and every night, God is near. God knows you, and God is with you.

Where is Jesus in this story?
Psalm 139 says God knew us before we were born. Jesus showed that same kind of knowing. When Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree” (John 1:48). Jesus also said a good shepherd “calls his own sheep by name” (John 10:3). He knows you, too.
What God wants to tell us
This beautiful song from David shows us that God knows you completely, and He loves you anyway. God knows your happiest days and your hardest days, your bravest moments and your most worried ones. There is nowhere you could ever go where God would not be right beside you. He made you on purpose, with care, just the way you are. You are not a mistake and you are never alone. You are precious to the God who knows everything about you and calls you His own.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You that You know everything about me and still love me so much. Thank You for making me special, just the way I am. Help me remember that You are always with me, wherever I go, so I never feel alone or afraid. I love You, God. Amen.
