Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God was ready to forgive.”
God had brought his people out of Egypt. Now they were camping at the foot of a big mountain, Mount Sinai.
God had given them his good rules. The first rules said, “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourselves an idol.” An idol is a statue that people pray to, instead of the real God.
Then Moses went up on God’s mountain. He stayed there forty days and forty nights. God was giving him his words on two stone tablets. Tablets are flat stones for writing on. Down below, the people waited and waited.
The people got tired of waiting. They said to Aaron, Moses’ brother, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us. We don’t know what has become of Moses.”
Aaron said, “Take off the golden rings, and bring them to me.” So the people brought their gold earrings. Can you make the sound of gold rings dropping in a pile? Clink, clink! Aaron made a calf out of the gold. A calf is a baby cow.
The people said, “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” But that was not true! The LORD had brought them out, not a calf of gold. Still they had a feast. They ate and drank, and they danced around the calf.
Up on the mountain, the LORD saw it all, and he was very angry. His people had done the very thing he told them not to do. That is called sin.
Moses begged the LORD for his people. “Turn from your fierce wrath.” Wrath means big anger. Moses said, “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants.” And the LORD turned away from what he had said he would do. God was ready to forgive.
Moses came down the mountain with the two stone tablets. God himself had written on them. Joshua was with him. Joshua heard a loud noise. Moses said it was the noise of people singing.
Then Moses saw the calf and the dancing. He was so angry that he threw down the tablets. Crash! They broke. What do you think Moses did next?
Moses burned up the golden calf. He asked Aaron, “What did these people do to you?” Aaron said, “I threw the gold into the fire, and out came this calf.” But Aaron had made it himself.
The next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin.” Then he went back up to the LORD. He prayed for them. “Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin.” God was ready to forgive.
Later God told Moses, “Chisel two stone tablets like the first.” Chisel means to cut stone with a tool. Tap, tap, tap! Can you tap like Moses cutting stone?
Early in the morning, Moses went up the mountain all alone. He carried the two new stone tablets in his hands. God was ready to forgive.
The LORD came down in the cloud and stood with him there. The LORD passed by Moses and called out, “The LORD! The LORD, a merciful and gracious God. Slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth.” Merciful and gracious means kind and forgiving. Abundant means very, very much.
Moses bowed his head down low and worshiped. He prayed, “Pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.” Pardon means forgive. Iniquity is another word for sin. Moses was asking God to keep them as his very own people.
And God wrote his good words on the new tablets once more. God made a new promise with his people.
The LORD is slow to anger and full of love. God was ready to forgive.

The Bible story
While Moses meets God on the mountain, the waiting people make a shiny golden calf, and discover that God's love is far bigger than any mistake they make.
Talk about it
- Where did Moses go to meet with God? — Up a tall mountain
- How did the people feel while they waited a long time for Moses? — Worried and impatient
- Who did the people ask to make them a god they could see? — Aaron
- What did Aaron ask the people to bring him? — Their gold
- What did Aaron make out of the melted gold? — A golden calf
- What did Moses carry down the mountain? — Two stone tablets
Where is Jesus in this story?
Moses loved the people so much that he asked God to blot his own name out of God's book if that would help (Exodus 32:32). But Moses could not pay for their sin. Jesus could, because He gave His own life for us and now stands between us and God as the one perfect go-between (1 Timothy 2:5–6).
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that even when we forget God or do something we know is wrong, He does not stop loving us. God is patient and gentle, and He is always ready to forgive when we turn back to Him. We do not have to be perfect to come close to God. When we are sorry, His kind love welcomes us home and gives us a brand new beginning, just like He did for His people at the mountain.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for loving me even when I forget You or do wrong things. Help me to trust You and to keep You first in my heart. Thank You that You always forgive me and give me a fresh start. Amen.
