Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “By faith, they trusted God!”
In the Bible there is a long letter called Hebrews. We do not know who wrote it. It was written to friends of Jesus who needed to stay strong. The letter tells about heroes who trusted God.
The letter says this. “Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.” Faith means trusting God, even when you cannot see what will happen. You cannot see the wind, but you know it is there.
First the letter says that God made the whole world with his word. We were not there to see it. But we trust God. The letter says that God gives good things to those who look for him.
Enoch trusted God. Enoch pleased God. And God took him away, so that he did not die. One day Enoch was just not there anymore!
Noah trusted God. God warned him about a flood nobody could see yet. So Noah built a big ship to save his family. Bang, bang went the hammer! By faith, they trusted God!
Abraham trusted God. God called him to go to a new land. And Abraham went out, not knowing where he went! He lived in tents. He was looking for the city that God builds.
Sarah trusted God too. She had a baby when she was very old. From that one family came many, many people. They were as many as the stars in the sky! Can you count all the stars? No? There are too many!
Isaac and Jacob trusted God too. When they were old, they blessed their children and grandchildren.
Moses’ mom and dad trusted God. They hid baby Moses for three months. They were not afraid of the king. By faith, they trusted God!
Moses grew up and trusted God too. He left Egypt and was not afraid of the king. He kept going, as if he could see God, who cannot be seen.
God’s people walked through the Red Sea on dry land. Later they walked around the city of Jericho for seven days. Let’s count the days: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Crash! The walls fell down.
Rahab trusted God. She welcomed God’s spies in peace and kept them safe. By faith, they trusted God!
Then the letter says, “What more shall I say?” There were so many more! Gideon, Samson, David, Samuel. Some even stopped the mouths of lions. Can you show a lion with its mouth shut tight? Some were saved from a hot fire. Some were weak, and God made them strong.
The letter says something wonderful. God “is not ashamed of them, to be called their God.” He has made a city ready for them. By faith, they trusted God!
All these heroes are like a great cloud all around us. And we look to Jesus, “the author and perfecter of faith.” He helps us trust God too.
God was faithful to every one of them. And he keeps every promise he makes. By faith, they trusted God!

Where is Jesus in this story?
Hebrews 11 says these heroes saw God's promises only “from a distance” and welcomed them (Hebrews 11:13). Jesus said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day” (John 8:56). They were all waiting for Jesus, the promise they trusted. Hebrews says they would not be made perfect without us (Hebrews 11:40), so you are part of their story.
What God wants to tell us
God does not ask us to be the biggest or the strongest. He simply asks us to trust Him, one small step at a time. Every hero in this story felt unsure or a little afraid, yet they held on to God's promises and found courage they did not know they had. When we trust God the way they did, He helps us be brave too, and He is always keeping His good promises to us.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for the brave heroes who trusted You. Please help me to trust You too, even when I feel small or afraid. Thank You that You always keep Your promises, and thank You most of all for Jesus. Help me to be brave and follow You today. Amen.
