Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Huldah spoke the words of the LORD.”
Huldah lived in Jerusalem. She was a prophetess – a woman who spoke God’s words. Her husband was Shallum. He took care of special clothes. Huldah spoke the words of the LORD.
At that time, good King Josiah ruled the land. He had become king when he was only eight years old. King Josiah was fixing God’s house. People from all over the land brought money for the work. The money paid for cut stones and wood for beams.
The workers were busy. Bang, bang! Saw, saw! Can you hammer and saw like the workers? The carpenters and builders worked hard. They were honest with the money. Some of their leaders were helpers in God’s house. They could play music very well.
Then Hilkiah the priest found something. “I have found the book of the law in the LORD’s house,” he said. It was God’s law, given long ago by Moses.
Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, the king’s helper. Shaphan carried it to the king. “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book,” he said. And he read from it to the king.
When the king heard God’s words, he tore his clothes. He was very sad. The people had not kept the LORD’s word for a long, long time.
The king said, “Go inquire of the LORD for me.” To inquire means to ask. He sent Hilkiah, Ahikam, Abdon, Shaphan and Asaiah. Five men! Can you show five fingers?
Where did they go? They went to Huldah. She lived in the second part of the city. They told her all about the book. God would speak to them through Huldah. Huldah spoke the words of the LORD.
Huldah listened. Then she said, “The LORD, the God of Israel says: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me.’” And she gave them God’s message.
Trouble would come to the land, because the people had turned away from God. Huldah spoke the words of the LORD.
But God had a message for the king too. “Because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God, I also have heard you.” A tender heart is a soft heart that is sorry. God had seen the king’s tears.
The men went back to the king. They told him everything Huldah had said. Now the king knew what God said.
Then the king called all the people to God’s house. The priests came. Big people and small people came. He read the whole book to them. Everyone listened. Can you put your hand behind your ear and listen too?
The king stood in his place. He promised to follow the LORD with all his heart and all his soul. Then he asked all the people to stand up and make the promise too. Can you stand up tall, like the people?
And all the king’s days, the people did not turn away from the LORD.
The LORD heard the king, and the LORD spoke to his people. Huldah spoke the words of the LORD.

Where is Jesus in this story?
When Josiah heard God's words, he humbled himself, wept, and obeyed, and God saw it (2 Chronicles 34:27). Jesus said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11:28). Huldah faithfully passed on God's message, and Josiah listened. Jesus brings us God's words even more clearly, and listening to Him is the happiest way to live.
What God wants to tell us
God does not only choose the loudest or most powerful people to do His important work. He chose Huldah, a quiet woman who listened to Him, and He chose young Josiah, who was humble enough to say sorry and truly listen. God can use anyone with a soft, honest heart, no matter how young or ordinary they feel. When we listen carefully to God and are brave enough to tell the truth in a kind way, we can help others come closer to Him too.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the true words in Your Bible and for people like Huldah who listened to You bravely. Please help me to have a soft heart that says sorry, listens well, and tells the truth kindly. Help me follow You with all my heart. Amen.
