Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “The LORD did as he had said.”
Abraham and Sarah had waited for a baby for a long, long time. Year after year after year. Abraham was seventy-five years old when God first promised him a big family. Now he was almost one hundred! And Sarah was almost ninety. That is very old.
One day God spoke to Abraham again. God gave Abraham’s wife a new name: Sarah. Sarah means “princess.” God said, “I will bless her. And moreover I will give you a son by her. She will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her.” A son is a baby boy. Kings would come from Sarah’s family!
When Abraham heard this, he bowed down with his face to the ground. And he laughed! Inside he thought, “Can a man who is one hundred have a child? Can Sarah have a baby at ninety?”
But God said, “Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You shall call his name Isaac.” God said his big promise would be for Isaac too, and for Isaac’s children, forever. The LORD did as he had said. Wait and see!
Later God came to visit Abraham’s tent. “Sarah your wife will have a son,” the LORD said. Sarah was listening behind the tent door. And Sarah laughed too! How could two old people have a baby? It seemed impossible. Impossible means it can’t happen.
The LORD said, “Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the set time I will return to you, and Sarah will have a son.” What do you think? Is anything too hard for God?
Nothing is too hard for God. The LORD visited Sarah, just as he had said. A baby began to grow inside Sarah’s tummy. And at the set time, Sarah had a baby boy! The set time means the very time God had picked. The LORD did as he had said.
Abraham was one hundred years old when his son was born. Abraham named the baby Isaac, just as God had told him. The name Isaac means “he laughs.”
Sarah held her little son. She laughed again, but now it was a happy laugh. Sarah said, “God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.” Can you laugh a happy laugh with Sarah? Ha ha ha!
“Who would have said it?” said Sarah. “I am feeding a baby, even though I am old! I have a son!” The LORD did as he had said.
Baby Isaac drank his mother’s milk, and he grew. Can you rock a little baby in your arms? Rock, rock, rock.
Isaac grew and grew. When he was big enough, he stopped drinking his mother’s milk. Then Abraham made a great feast – a big party with lots of food. Can you clap for Isaac?
Twenty-five years of waiting – and God had not forgotten. The LORD did as he had said.
God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah, right on time. The LORD did as he had said.

Talk about it
- Who was the old, kind couple who wished and waited for a baby? — Abraham and Sarah
- What did God tell Abraham to look up and count one night? — The stars
- What did Sarah do when she heard she would have a baby? — She laughed
- God asked, 'Is anything too hard for...' who? — The Lord
- How old was Abraham when baby Isaac was born? — 100 years old
- What name did they give the new baby boy? — Isaac
Where is Jesus in this story?
Isaac's birth was a miracle, because his mother was far too old to have a baby. Jesus' birth was an even greater miracle, because Mary was not yet married and God's Spirit made it happen (Luke 1:34–35). And the Bible says that everyone who trusts Jesus becomes a “child of promise” like Isaac (Galatians 4:28), born into God's family by God's power.
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that God never forgets His promises. Abraham and Sarah waited many long years, and sometimes it felt as if their dream would never come true. But at just the right moment, God gave them baby Isaac and turned all their waiting into laughter. Whenever we wait for something, we can trust that God loves us, God is with us, and God's perfect timing is always, always worth the wait.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You that You always keep Your promises, even when we have to wait a long time. Help me to trust You like Abraham and Sarah did, and fill my heart with happy laughter. I know that nothing is ever too hard for You. Amen.
