Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “A special supper with Jesus.”
It was time for the Passover. That was a special holiday meal for God’s people. At the Passover, they remembered how God led them out of Egypt long ago. Every family ate a Passover meal together. They ate lamb and flat bread.
Flat bread is thin and flat, like a big cracker. It does not puff up like other bread.
Jesus sent two friends, Peter and John. He said, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.” To prepare means to get everything ready. “Where do you want us to prepare?” they asked.
Jesus said, “When you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.” A pitcher is a big jug. “He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there.” An upper room is a room upstairs.
Peter and John went. They found everything, just as Jesus had told them. And they got the Passover meal ready. A special supper with Jesus.
When evening came, Jesus sat down at the table with his twelve friends. In those days, people lay on cushions around a low table to eat. Can you count to twelve? One, two, three … all the way to twelve!
Jesus spoke to his friends. “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Earnestly desired means: wanted very, very much. To suffer means to have great pain. Jesus knew that something very hard was coming soon.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks to God. Can you fold your hands, like Jesus giving thanks? Then he broke the bread and gave it to his friends.
He said, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” In memory of me means: to remember me. A special supper with Jesus.
After supper Jesus took the cup. He gave thanks again and gave it to them. “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you.” A covenant is a promise from God.
Jesus was going to give his life for his friends. He was going to die for them. And he wanted them to remember him. But that would not be the end. God would raise him up again!
Then Jesus told them something about the days to come. He would not drink from the cup again for a while. He would wait for a new day in his Father’s Kingdom. On that day he would drink it with them again!
Jesus and his friends would be together again in God’s Kingdom. What a happy promise! A special supper with Jesus.
When supper was over, they sang a hymn. A hymn is a song to God. Can you hum a quiet song? Hmm, hmm. Then they all went out into the night. They went to a hill called the Mount of Olives.
Jesus gave himself for us, because he loves us. A special supper with Jesus.

Where is Jesus in this story?
The Last Supper points straight to Jesus and His rescuing love. The bread and the cup were Jesus' way of showing that He would give Himself for us, so that everyone could be forgiven and brought close to God. Just as the Passover helped people remember God's rescue long ago, the Last Supper helps us remember that Jesus is our greatest rescuer, full of love that never ends.
What God wants to tell us
In the Last Supper, Jesus showed His friends that His love is bigger than anything. He shared bread and a cup so they would always remember how much He cared for them. God wants us to know that we are never alone and never forgotten. Just like Jesus asked His friends to remember Him, we can remember every day that God's love is close, warm, and here to stay.
Prayer
Thank You, God, for Jesus and for His wonderful love. Thank You that You always remember me and never leave me alone. Help me to remember You every day and to share kindness with others. I love You. Amen.
