I Am the Light of the World Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “The light shines in the darkness.”
Every year, God’s people had a big, happy festival. It was called the Feast of Booths. A booth is a little shelter, like a hut. People made them out of branches and leaves. For seven days, families lived in little shelters!
The shelters helped them remember. Long ago, God brought his people out of Egypt. On the long way, they lived in shelters too. And God took care of them.
Can you make a little hut with your hands? Put your fingertips together, like a roof!
Many people came to Jerusalem for the feast. They came to God’s house, the temple. Jesus was there too. In the middle of the feast, he taught the people.
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up. He called out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!” Jesus gives what we need most.
Jesus spoke in the temple, near the place where people gave their gifts.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” The light shines in the darkness.
Think about the dark. At night, when the lights are off, everything is black. You can’t see where to go. You might bump into things. Bump! Even grown-ups need a light in the dark. Light helps us see.
Let’s close our eyes. It’s dark! Now open them. Light! Now you can see again.
Jesus said, “He who follows me will not walk in the darkness. But will have the light of life.” To follow means to go where someone goes. The light of life means Jesus shows us the way. And he gives us life.
Think of walking at night behind someone with a lamp. You stay close. You go where the lamp goes. Then you don’t trip in the dark. The light shines in the darkness.
Let’s play follow the leader. Walk, walk, walk! Stay close behind!
Remember how God made the world? The very first thing God said was, “Let there be light.” God loves light. And Jesus is the light God sent to us.
John wrote about Jesus at the start of his book. He said that in Jesus was life. And that life was the light for all people. Jesus’ light shines on, and the darkness can never put it out. No darkness is stronger than Jesus. The light shines in the darkness.
Some children are a little afraid of the dark. That is okay. The Bible says that to God, the dark is like light. God sees you, and Jesus is near.
Tonight it is dark outside. Maybe a little night-light glows in your room. But Jesus is with us in the day and in the night. The light shines in the darkness.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What do you like to have with you when it is dark?
- How does it feel when someone turns on the light?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a bright light shining in a dark night.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“I am the light of the world.” — John 8:12 (I am the light → open your hands like a shining lamp; of the world → make a big circle with your arms)
Dear Jesus, thank you that you are the light of the world. Thank you that you are with me in the dark. Amen.

Where is Jesus in this story?
From the very beginning, God's light has been pushing back the dark. When Jesus stood in the Temple and said 'I am the light of the world,' He was telling everyone that God's rescuing love had come to be with them in person. Jesus is the light that guides us, warms us, and never burns out. He came to find people who feel lost in the dark and bring them safely into the bright, warm love of God, and He still does that for every child who follows Him today.
What God wants to tell us
Sometimes the world feels dark and confusing, and we are not sure which way to go. Jesus tells us that He is the light, and that anyone who follows Him will never have to walk in the dark alone. We do not have to see the whole path ahead or be big and brave enough to figure everything out. We only need to stay close to Jesus, step by step, and He will lead us gently and kindly all the way home to God.
Prayer
Loving God, thank You that Jesus is the light of the world. When I feel scared or lost in the dark, help me remember that You are always near. Please hold my hand and lead me step by step, and help me follow Your light every day. Amen.
