The Lord’s Prayer Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Our Father in heaven hears us.”
Jesus was teaching on a mountain. Many people listened. He talked about praying. Praying means talking to God. You can talk to God about anything!
Long ago, some people liked to show everyone how much they prayed. Some people prayed on the street corners. They stood where everyone could see them. They wanted others to see them. Jesus said people saw them – and that was all they got.
But Jesus said, “When you pray, enter into your inner room. Having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret.” An inner room is a quiet room inside the house.
Jesus said, “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” God sees you, even when nobody else does. He hears you, even when you whisper.
Let’s close the door. Shhh. Fold your hands. It is quiet now. Just you and God.
Jesus said, “In praying, don’t use vain repetitions.” That means: Don’t say lots of empty words, just to make your prayer long. God is not looking for many words.
Jesus said, “Your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.” Before you even ask! Our Father in heaven hears us.
Then Jesus said, “Pray like this.” And he taught them a prayer. We call it the Lord’s Prayer. Let’s say it together, one line at a time. You can say it after me.
“Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” Can you point up to heaven? Holy means very special and good. God’s name is the best name of all. Our Father in heaven hears us.
“Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” God’s Kingdom is where God is King. God’s will is what God wants. In heaven, everyone does what God wants. We ask God to make it like that here too.
“Give us today our daily bread.” Daily bread is the food we need each day. Bread, and fruit, and everything we need each day. We ask God for it, and we thank him for it.
“Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.” Here, debts means the wrong things we did. We ask God to forgive us. And we forgive others too.
“Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Temptation is when we want to do something wrong. The evil one is God’s enemy, the devil. Deliver means save. We ask God to keep us safe.
“For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.” Glory is God’s great, shining greatness. Amen means: Yes, it is true! Our Father in heaven hears us.
God is our Father, and he loves to hear his children. You can talk to him tonight, right in your own bed. You can say thank you. You can ask for help. He listens. Our Father in heaven hears us.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What would you like to tell God today?
- Where is a quiet place where you like to pray?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw yourself praying to God in a quiet place.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” — Matthew 6:9 (Our Father → point up; in heaven → lift both arms high; kept holy → fold your hands and bow your head)
Dear God, thank you that you are our Father in heaven. Thank you that you hear me when I pray. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: God is a loving Father
Memory verse: “Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” — Matthew 6:9 · WEB
The Bible story
Jesus sits on a sunny hillside and teaches the crowds a simple, special prayer, showing children everywhere how to talk with God like a loving Father.
Talk about it
- Where did Jesus say to go when you pray alone? — Into your room
- Who did Jesus say knows what we need before we ask? — Our Father in heaven
- What did Jesus say we do NOT need when we pray? — Lots of words
- What special name did Jesus teach us to call God? — Our Father
- Where is our Father, in the prayer Jesus taught? — In heaven
- What did Jesus teach us to pray about God's will? — Done on earth as in heaven
Where is Jesus in this story?
Jesus Himself called God “Abba, Father” when He prayed in the garden (Mark 14:36). Abba is a close family word, a bit like “Dad.” Because Jesus brings us into God's family, the Bible says God's Spirit helps us cry “Abba, Father” too (Romans 8:15). So when you pray “Our Father,” you are praying the way Jesus Himself prayed.
What God wants to tell us
Jesus showed us something amazing: we can talk to God any time, just like talking to a kind and loving daddy. We do not need big, clever words. God already loves us and wants to hear from us. We can thank Him, ask Him for what we need, say sorry, and forgive others. Prayer is a gift that keeps our hearts close to God, and He is always, always listening.
Prayer
Thank You, God, for being my loving Father in heaven. Thank You that I can talk to You any time, anywhere. Please give me what I need today, help me to be kind, and help me forgive others. Keep me safe and close to You. Amen.
