Lydia by the River Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “The Lord opened her heart.”
Paul and his friends were traveling to tell people about Jesus. Silas and young Timothy were with him. They wanted to go to one land. But the Holy Spirit said no. They tried to go to another land. But the Spirit said no again. So they went on. At last they came to a town by the sea, called Troas.
One night God showed Paul a vision, like a dream. A man from a land called Macedonia stood there. He begged Paul, “Come over into Macedonia and help us.”
The man who wrote this story was there with Paul. He tells us they got ready right away. They knew the Lord had called them to tell the good news there.
So Paul and his friends got on a ship. They sailed across the sea. Whoosh went the wind! Can you be a sailboat and blow like the wind? They passed an island. The next day they came to land. Then they walked to the city of Philippi.
Philippi was a big, important city in Macedonia. Paul and his friends stayed there for some days.
On the day of rest, they walked out of the city to a river. They thought people might come there to pray. Some women had come together by the water. Paul and his friends sat down and talked with them.
One of the women was named Lydia. She came from a city far away, called Thyatira. People there were known for making cloth in bright colors. Lydia sold purple cloth. Purple was a very special color. It was hard to make, and it cost a lot. Kings wore purple! Can you find something purple near you?
Lydia already prayed to God. Now she listened to Paul. He told her the good news about Jesus. The Lord opened her heart. She believed what Paul said.
That is how it happened. Paul talked. Lydia listened. And God helped her understand. Can you open your hands, like a heart that opens?
Then Lydia was baptized. All the people in her house were baptized too. Splash! Water to show that now they belonged to Jesus. The Lord opened her heart.
Then Lydia begged Paul and his friends. “If you think I am faithful to the Lord, come and stay!” She wanted them to be her guests.
She begged them. And at last they said yes. So Paul and his friends went to stay in Lydia’s house.
Lydia opened her home. Paul and his friends had a place to sleep and eat. And the friends of Jesus in Philippi had a place to meet. The Lord opened her heart.
Later, Paul and Silas had some very hard days in Philippi. But afterward they came back to Lydia’s house. The friends of Jesus were there. Paul and Silas cheered them up. Then they went on to the next town.
God had sent his good news across the sea. It came right to Lydia, by the quiet river. The Lord opened her heart.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What do you think Lydia and the women talked about by the river?
- How can you make a guest feel welcome in your home, like Lydia did?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a line to who said it.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“The Lord opened her heart to listen” — Acts 16:14 (The Lord → point up high; opened her heart → hands on your heart, then open them wide; to listen → hand behind your ear)
Dear God, thank you for opening Lydia’s heart. Please open my heart to listen to you too. Amen.

- What special cloth did Lydia sell? — Purple cloth
- In which city did Lydia live? — Philippi
- Where did Lydia go to pray on the day of rest? — Beside the river
- Who came and sat down to talk with the women? — Paul and his friends

Where is Jesus in this story?
Luke says “the Lord opened her heart” so Lydia could understand Paul's message (Acts 16:14). After Jesus rose from the dead, He did the same for His disciples: “He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45). Jesus still opens hearts today, and you can ask Him to help you understand His Word too.
What God wants to tell us
Lydia was already a good and busy woman, but God had something even more wonderful to give her: the good news of Jesus. When she listened, God opened her heart, and her happiness spilled right out into kindness. She threw open her home so others could learn about God too. This shows us that when we say yes to God's love, He fills us up with joy, and that joy is meant to be shared. You do not have to be grown-up or important to welcome others, pray for them, and make room for God's love wherever you are.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for loving Lydia by the river, and for loving me too. Please open my heart to know Jesus more each day. Help me to be kind, to welcome others, and to share Your love wherever I go. Amen.
