Water at Meribah — Moses’ Mistake Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God gave water from the rock.”
God’s people had been in the wilderness for a long, long time. Now they came to a place called Kadesh, in a dry land called the wilderness of Zin. Moses was very old by now. But there was no water to drink. Not one drop!
The people quarreled with Moses and Aaron. To quarrel means to fight with words. “Why have you brought us into this wilderness?” they said. “There are no figs, no grapes, no fruit. And there is no water to drink!” The children were thirsty. The animals were thirsty. Can you show me a thirsty face?
Moses and Aaron did not quarrel back. They went away from the crowd, to the door of God’s tent. They fell down on their faces. And the LORD’s glory appeared to them – God’s great, bright presence.
God spoke to Moses. “Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother. Speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water.” Assemble the congregation means gather all the people.
God said to speak to the rock. Just speak! What do you think Moses would do?
Long before, at another place, God had told Moses to hit a rock. And water came out. God gave water from the rock. But this time, God said: speak to it.
Moses took the rod from before the LORD, just as God said. He and Aaron gathered everyone in front of the rock. The rock was hard and dry.
The people had made Moses very troubled. He said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?” Rebels are people who do not obey. Moses did not speak to the rock. He spoke to the people.
Then Moses lifted up his hand. He hit the rock with his rod – two times! Can you knock two times on the floor? Knock, knock!
And water came gushing out! Cool, fresh water! Water out of a hard, dry rock! Lots and lots of water! Splash! It ran over the stones. There was enough for every mom and dad and child. There was enough for all the sheep and goats too. Slurp, slurp! God gave water from the rock.
God still gave water to his thirsty people. He was kind to them, even when they quarreled.
But God was not pleased with Moses and Aaron. They had not done it God’s way. They had not shown the people how holy and great God is. God wanted everyone to see that the water came from him. The LORD said, “Because you didn’t believe in me, you shall not bring this assembly into the land.”
So Moses and Aaron would not lead the people into the new land. Maybe that made Moses very sad. But God’s people had water to drink. God gave water from the rock.
The place was called Meribah. That means quarreling. But even there, God took care of his thirsty people. God gave water from the rock.

In a dry desert where nobody could find water, God gave Moses a gentle job to do — but one angry moment turned it into a lesson about trusting God.
Talk about it
- Where did the Israelites stop when they had no water? — Kadesh in the desert
- What was the big problem the people had? — There was no water to drink
- What did the people do about their problem? — They complained to Moses

Where is Jesus in this story?
Long ago, Moses struck a rock and water poured out to save thirsty people. The Bible tells us that this rock points to Jesus, who gives us living water that never runs dry. Moses made a mistake, but Jesus never did — He obeyed His Father perfectly and with a loving heart. Jesus is the true Rock, and everyone who comes to Him can drink deeply of God's love and never be thirsty inside again.
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that God is patient and loving, even when His people grumble — He still gave them cool, fresh water to drink. But God also wants us to trust Him and obey Him carefully, not only when it is easy, but even when we feel cross or tired. When Moses let his anger take over, he forgot to do things God's way. God reminds us that obeying Him, calmly and fully, is always the very best choice, because He always knows what is good for us.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for always giving me what I need, even on hard and tiring days. When I feel upset, please help me to stay calm and to trust You. Teach me to obey You quickly and to do things Your way. Thank You for loving me even when I make mistakes. Amen.
