Michal and the Escape — David Flees from Saul Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God kept David safe.”
David was a brave young man. He had fought the giant Goliath, and God had helped him win. Now David was married to Michal, the king’s daughter. But King Saul was jealous of David. Jealous means he was angry that David was so loved. Saul wanted David to die.
Saul’s son Jonathan was David’s best friend. Jonathan talked to his father. “Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David,” he said. David had only done good things for Saul. And Saul listened. “As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death,” said Saul. So David came back.
But then there was war again. David fought, and God’s people won. And Saul became angry with David again. That night, David had to slip away.
Saul sent men to watch David’s house. They were waiting to catch him in the morning. Michal found out. “You must get away tonight!” she told David.
So Michal let David down through the window. Down, down, down he went. Then David ran away into the dark night. Can you pretend to climb down a rope? God kept David safe.
Then Michal had an idea. She took a statue and laid it in David’s bed. She put a pillow of goats’ hair at its head. She covered it up with clothes. It looked like someone sleeping!
In the morning, Saul’s men came to get David. “He is sick,” said Michal. But Saul sent the men back. They went in. Surprise! It was only a statue with a goat-hair pillow!
David ran all the way to Samuel, God’s prophet, in the town of Ramah. He told Samuel everything Saul had done. Then David and Samuel stayed together in a place called Naioth. God kept David safe.
Saul sent men to catch David there too. But God’s Spirit came on the men. They began to speak God’s words with the prophets, instead of catching David!
Saul sent more men. The same thing happened. He sent men a third time. The same thing happened again! Let’s count: one, two, three times! God kept David safe.
Then Saul came himself. What do you think happened? God’s Spirit came on Saul too! He also spoke God’s words, just like the prophets. People were so surprised. They said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
Later, Jonathan said goodbye to David. The two friends cried together. “Go in peace,” Jonathan said. “The LORD is between me and you.” That meant God would always be with them both.
David hid in a big cave. A cave is a big hole in a hill. It is like a room made of rock. His brothers and his family came to him there. Many other people in trouble came too. Soon David had about four hundred men with him.
King Saul was strong. But the LORD was stronger. God kept David safe in the dark night, and in the big cave. And God watches over you too, all through the night. God kept David safe.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- How do you think David felt climbing out of the window in the dark?
- What do you think Saul’s men said when they found the statue in the bed?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)

6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“The LORD’s angel encamps around those who fear him” — Psalm 34:7 (The LORD’s angel → flap your arms like wings; encamps around → draw a big circle around you; those who fear him → fold your hands)
Dear God, thank you that you kept David safe. Thank you that you watch over me day and night. Amen.

Where is Jesus in this story?
God kept David safe because He had a special plan for David's family. Many years later, Jesus was born from David's family line — the true and gentle King. When Jesus was a baby, God protected Him from another jealous king, just as He had protected David. Jesus came to rescue us and to be our safe hiding place forever, showing us how much God loves to save His children.
What God wants to tell us
Even when David had to run and hide, he was never really alone. God saw every single step he took, and God used kind people like Michal to keep him safe. When we feel afraid or far from home, we can remember that God is watching over us too. He loves us, He never falls asleep, and He guides us until we are safe again.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for watching over David and keeping him safe. When I feel scared, please remind me that You are always near and that You love me. Help me to be brave and kind like Michal, and to trust You with all my heart. Thank You for being my safe place. Amen.
