John’s Vision on Patmos Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Jesus is alive forever and ever!”
John was a friend of Jesus. Now he was on a small island in the sea. It was called Patmos. John was there because he told people God’s word about Jesus.
John was not alone in his trouble. He called himself a brother and partner of all the friends of Jesus. They had hard times too.
John wrote a letter to seven churches. He wrote about Jesus, “who loves us, and washed us from our sins.” That means Jesus makes us clean inside, like washing dirty hands. Jesus is alive forever and ever!
The Lord God says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” Alpha and Omega are letters in John’s language. Alpha is the first letter. Omega is the last. Like A and Z! God was there before everything, and he will be there forever.
John also wrote this. “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him.” One day, everyone will see Jesus!
On the Lord’s day, John heard a loud voice behind him. It sounded like a trumpet! Can you make a trumpet sound? Toot-toot!
The voice gave John a job. “What you see, write in a book and send to the seven assemblies.” An assembly is a church. The seven churches were in seven towns, not far from Patmos. One of them was Ephesus, where Paul once lived.
John turned around to see who was speaking. He saw seven golden lampstands, like tall shining lamps. Let’s count them: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven!
And among the lampstands stood Jesus. He wore a long robe and a golden sash. His hair was white as snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet shone like bright brass.
His voice was like the sound of many waters. Whoosh! Can you make the sound of a big waterfall? His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.
In his right hand he held seven stars. When John saw him, he fell down at his feet.
Then Jesus laid his right hand on John. He said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever.” Jesus is alive forever and ever!
Jesus told John what the stars and lampstands meant. The seven lampstands are the seven churches. And Jesus was right there among them! He was with his people.
Jesus told John to write down everything he saw. So John wrote it in a book. That book is in our Bible. It is called Revelation. Jesus is alive forever and ever!
At the start of the book, John wrote this. “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words.” Blessed means happy. You are hearing God’s words right now!
The Living One was right there with John, even on a lonely island. And he is with you tonight. Jesus is alive forever and ever!

Where is Jesus in this story?
When John fell at Jesus' feet as though dead, Jesus placed His right hand on him and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death” (Revelation 1:17–18). That same living Jesus holds you too.
What God wants to tell us
Even on a lonely island, John was never truly alone, because Jesus stood right beside him. When we feel small, sad, or far from the people we love, God shows us the same wonderful truth He showed John: we belong to a mighty, living Savior who holds the whole world in His kind hands. And remember, His very first words were the gentlest ones of all: do not be afraid.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You that I am never, ever alone. When I feel scared or sad, help me remember that Jesus is alive and standing right beside me. Thank You for loving me and holding me safe in Your strong, kind hands. I love You. Amen.
