1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Paul and Silas sang to God.”
Paul and Silas were in the city of Philippi. They told people about Jesus. A woman named Lydia listened, and she believed.
A slave girl there had a bad spirit in her. A slave is someone who must work for others and is not free. Her masters made lots of money from her. The girl followed Paul and his friends for many days. She cried out, “These men are servants of the Most High God!”
At last Paul turned around. He spoke to the spirit. “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out that very hour. The bad spirit was gone.
But her masters were angry. Now they could not make money from her anymore. They grabbed Paul and Silas. They dragged them to the marketplace, to the leaders of the city.
A big crowd shouted against them. The leaders had them beaten. Then they threw them into prison. The jailer had to keep them safe and locked up. A jailer is the man who watches over a prison.
The jailer put them in the inner prison, deep inside. He locked their feet in the stocks – heavy wood with holes for the feet. Now they could not move their feet.
It was dark. It was midnight. But Paul and Silas were praying. And they were singing hymns – songs to God. Paul and Silas sang to God.
The other prisoners were listening to them. Can you sing a little song to God? Paul and Silas sang to God.
Suddenly there was a great earthquake. An earthquake is when the ground shakes. Rumble, rumble! Can you shake like the ground? The whole prison shook. All the doors opened! Everyone’s chains came loose!
The jailer woke up. He saw the prison doors open. He thought all the prisoners had run away. He was very upset.
But Paul called out with a loud voice. “Don’t harm yourself, for we are all here!” Nobody had run away! Not one!
The jailer called for lights. He ran in and fell down, trembling. He brought them out. He asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Paul and Silas answered him. “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Your household means your whole family.
Paul and Silas told the jailer and his family about Jesus. That same night the jailer washed their wounds. He and all his family were baptized.
Then he took them up into his house. He gave them food. They were all full of joy, because they believed in God. Paul and Silas sang to God.
In the morning the leaders sent word: “Let those men go.” So Paul and Silas went out of the prison. They went back to Lydia’s house. They saw the brothers there and cheered them up. Then they went on their way.
God was with Paul and Silas, even in the dark prison at midnight. Paul and Silas sang to God.

Where is Jesus in this story?
At midnight the trembling jailer asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?” They answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus” (Acts 16:30–31). On the night before the cross, Jesus Himself sang a hymn with His friends before going out to face His suffering (Mark 14:26). Because of Him, His people can sing even in dark places.
What God wants to tell us
Paul and Silas showed us that we can trust God even when things feel dark and hard. Instead of giving up, they filled the prison with songs and prayers. God is always close to us, and He loves to turn our sad or scary moments into something full of hope. When we choose to trust Him, He gives us a joy that no locked door can ever take away.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are always with me, even when things feel dark or scary. Help me to sing and trust You just like Paul and Silas did. Thank You that Jesus sets me free and fills my heart with joy. I love You. Amen.
