Salt and Light Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “Salt and light, good and bright!”
Jesus sat on a mountain. Many people had come to listen. His friends sat close to him. He told them about two things everyone knows: salt and light. Salt and light, good and bright!
First, salt. Salt makes food taste good. Just a little salt, and the food tastes better. Mmm! Not too much – just a little. Can you pretend to shake salt on your food? Shake, shake!
Long ago, there were no fridges. People used salt to keep fish and meat from going bad. Salt was very important! In Jesus’ land, salt came from a very salty sea, the Dead Sea.
Jesus said to his friends, “You are the salt of the earth.” Salt is good for food. And God’s people are good for the world. Salt and light, good and bright!
Next, light. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” The world means everywhere – all the people and all the lands.
Then he said, “A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.” In Jesus’ land, many towns were built on hills. At night, you could see their little lights from far away.
Long ago, nights were very dark. There were no streetlights. In the dark, you could bump into things. Ouch! But with a light, everyone could see the way.
Now think about a lamp. Long ago, a lamp was a little clay bowl with oil and a flame. Many houses had just one room. So one little lamp could light up the whole house!
Would you light a lamp and then hide it under a basket – a basket for measuring grain? No! That would be silly! Can you shake your head? No, no, no! A basket would cover up the light. Then the house would be dark again.
You put the lamp on a stand – a tall holder. Up high! Then it shines to all who are in the house. Salt and light, good and bright!
Jesus said, “Even so, let your light shine before men.” Why? Jesus said, “That they may see your good works and glorify your Father.” Good works are good and kind things you do. To glorify means to praise.
Jesus also said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness.” Jesus is the great light. And he makes his friends little lights too.
Hold up one finger, like a little candle. Now let it shine! Wave it high, so everyone can see.
When people see good things, they praise God, our Father in heaven. Tonight, when the lights go out, remember: Jesus is the light of the world. And God is with you, even in the dark night. Salt and light, good and bright!
3. Talk together (3 min)
- What happens when you turn on a light in a dark room?
- What kind thing could you do today that would shine like a light?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a lamp on a stand, shining for everyone in the house.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“You are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14 (You → point to someone near you; the light → open your hands like a shining star; of the world → draw a big circle in the air)
Dear God, thank you that Jesus calls us the light of the world. Help my light shine for you. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)

Where is Jesus in this story?
Jesus did not only teach about light — He is the Light of the world. He came to shine God's rescuing love into every dark and sad place and to bring us close to God. When we follow Jesus, He places His light inside us, so our little lamps can glow with His great love and lead others gently home to Him.
What God wants to tell us
God has made you special, like a pinch of salt and a bright little lamp. You do not need to be big or loud to make a difference. Every time you are kind, honest, and loving, your light shines and helps someone else feel God's warmth. And when people see your goodness, they get to see how good and loving God is too.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for making me a little light in Your big world. Help me be kind, honest, and loving so others can see You shining through me. Let my light shine bright for You today, and fill my heart with Your warm love. Amen.
