Samson Is Born Preschool Sunday School Lesson (Free, Ages 3–6)
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God had a plan for this little boy.”
A man named Manoah lived with his wife in a town called Zorah. They had no children. And God’s people had a big problem. Their enemies, the Philistines, ruled over them. For forty long years!
One day the LORD’s angel came to Manoah’s wife. “See now, you are childless,” he said. “But you shall bear a son.” A son! A baby boy! God had a plan for this little boy.
“No razor shall come on his head,” said the angel. A razor cuts hair. So the boy’s hair must never be cut. He would belong to God in a special way. Can you shake your head like you have long, long hair?
“He shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines,” said the angel. God had a plan for this little boy.
The woman went to tell her husband. “A man of God came to me,” she said. “His face was like the face of the angel of God, very awesome.” Awesome means so great and wonderful that it makes you feel very small. “He said I will have a baby boy!”
Manoah prayed to the LORD. “Oh, Lord, please let the man of God come again to us,” he said. “Teach us what we should do to the child.”
God listened to Manoah. The angel came again to the woman. She was sitting in the field, and Manoah was not with her. So she hurried and ran to tell him. Can you run in place, fast, fast, fast?
Manoah came with her to the man. “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?” he asked. “I am,” said the angel.
“Please stay with us,” said Manoah. He wanted to cook him a meal. But the angel said, “I won’t eat your bread. If you will prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the LORD.” A burnt offering was a gift to God, burned on a fire. Manoah did not know yet that this was the LORD’s angel.
“What is your name?” asked Manoah. The angel said, “Why do you ask about my name, since it is incomprehensible?” That means it was too wonderful to understand.
So Manoah made an offering to God on a big rock. Then something amazing happened. The flame went up toward the sky. And the LORD’s angel went up in the flame! Whoosh! Can you lift your arms slowly up high, like the flame?
Manoah and his wife bowed down with their faces to the ground. They did not see the angel again. Now Manoah knew it was the LORD’s angel. And Manoah was afraid.
But his wife was wise. God had shown them all these things, she said. God had told them good news. God was being kind to them. God had a plan for this little boy.
Then the woman had a baby boy. She named him Samson. The child grew, and the LORD blessed him. Blessed means God was good to him and helped him. Then the LORD’s Spirit began to move him.
God had heard Manoah’s prayer. And God watches over children as they grow, even while they sleep. God had a plan for this little boy.

Where is Jesus in this story?
The angel told Manoah's wife that her son would “take the lead in delivering Israel” from the Philistines (Judges 13:5). Samson only began that job. Many years later an angel told Joseph to name Mary's baby Jesus, “because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Jesus did not just begin to save; He finished the work completely.
What God wants to tell us
For many years Manoah and his wife waited with sad, hopeful hearts, and God did not forget them. He saw their longing and sent them a wonderful promise that came true right on time. God's promises are always worth waiting for, because He loves us and never forgets even one of His children.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for keeping Your promises, even when we have to wait. Help me to trust You when my heart feels sad, and to remember that You never forget me. Thank You for loving me every single day. Amen.
