The Still Small Voice Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God cared for tired Elijah.”
Elijah was God’s prophet. On a mountain called Carmel, God had sent fire from heaven. All the people had shouted, “The LORD, he is God!” Then King Ahab told Queen Jezebel all that Elijah had done.
Wicked Queen Jezebel was very angry. She wanted Elijah to die. She sent a messenger to tell him so. Elijah was afraid, and he ran far away. He left his helper behind. Then he walked a whole day, all alone, into the wilderness.
Elijah sat down under a juniper tree. That is a bush that gives a little shade. He was so tired and so sad. “It is enough,” he said. Then he lay down and fell asleep under the tree.
Then an angel touched him. “Arise and eat!” the angel said. Elijah looked. There by his head was a warm cake baked on hot coals, and a jar of water! He ate and drank and lay down again. God cared for tired Elijah.
The angel came a second time. “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you,” he said. So Elijah ate and drank again. Can you rub your tummy?
That food made Elijah strong. He walked for forty days and forty nights. At last he came to God’s mountain, called Horeb. He went into a cave to rest. God cared for tired Elijah.
Then the LORD spoke to him. “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah told God how bad things were. God’s people had turned away from God. “I, even I only, am left,” said Elijah. “They seek my life, to take it away.” Elijah felt all alone.
Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And the LORD passed by.
First came a great, strong wind. Whoosh! It broke the rocks in pieces. But the LORD was not in the wind. Can you blow like a big wind?
Then came an earthquake. Rumble, rumble! The ground shook. But the LORD was not in the earthquake. Then came a fire. Crackle, crackle! But the LORD was not in the fire.
After the fire, there was a still small voice. Shhh. Can you whisper very, very softly? When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his coat. He went out and stood at the opening of the cave.
A voice came to him. “What are you doing here, Elijah?” And Elijah said the same thing again. He still felt all alone.
But God gave Elijah new work to do. God told him to go back. He would find a man named Elisha. Elisha would be his helper, and a prophet after him. God cared for tired Elijah.
And God said, “Yet I reserved seven thousand in Israel.” Seven thousand people in Israel still loved God! Elijah was not alone at all.
God was gentle with Elijah. He gave him food and rest, and spoke to him in a still small voice. When you are tired, God cares for you too. God cared for tired Elijah.
3. Talk together (3 min)
- How do you think Elijah felt when he woke up and saw the warm bread?
- Why do you think God spoke in a quiet voice instead of a loud one?
4. Move (3 min)
Refrain Freeze: move around the room; when you say the refrain, everyone freezes and says it together.
5. Make (4 min)
Draw a line from each sound to what came on the mountain.
6. Verse and prayer (2 min)
“After the fire, there was a still small voice.” — 1 Kings 19:12 (After the fire → wiggle your fingers like flames; a still → hold very still; small voice → finger on your lips, whisper)
Dear God, thank you that you care for me when I am tired and sad. Thank you for your gentle voice. Amen.
Lesson for older kids (ages 6–10)
Big idea: God speaks in gentle ways
Memory verse: “After the earthquake a fire passed; but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice.” — 1 Kings 19:12 · WEB

Tired, frightened and all alone, Elijah runs far away to a mountain to hide, but God finds his weary friend in the gentlest, most surprising way of all.
Talk about it
- How was Elijah feeling at the start of the story? — Tired and afraid
- Where did Elijah run to hide by himself? — The desert
- Who touched Elijah and told him to eat? — A gentle angel
- What did God give Elijah to make him strong? — Bread and water
- What was the name of the mountain Elijah walked to? — Mount Horeb
- Where did Elijah stay when he reached the mountain? — In a cave
Where is Jesus in this story?
Long after Elijah heard God's gentle whisper on Mount Horeb, he stood on another mountain, talking with Jesus at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:3). Then God's voice spoke from a bright cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love... Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). The God who whispered to tired Elijah now speaks to us most clearly through Jesus.
What God wants to tell us
Sometimes we think God will only come in big, loud, exciting ways. But this story shows us that God often speaks softly, right into our hearts. When you feel tired, worried, or alone, you can be still and quiet and remember that God is close to you. He knows your name, He gives you what you need, and He whispers His love to you every single day.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for being close to me even when I feel tired or afraid. Help me to be still and listen for Your gentle voice. Thank You that I am never alone, because You are always with me and You love me. Amen.
