Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “The wedding feast was ready!”
Jesus was in the temple in Jerusalem. He told the people stories about the Kingdom of Heaven – where God is King. One story was about a king. The king’s son was getting married. So the king made a wedding feast. That is a big, happy party with lots of good food.
Long ago, a wedding feast could last for many days. There was so much to eat and so much joy! Everyone came in their best clothes.
In those days, guests were invited first. Then, when the food was ready, a servant came to call them: Come now!
The king had invited many guests. When the feast was ready, he sent his servants to call them. But they would not come.
The king tried again. He sent other servants. He told them, “Tell those who are invited, ‘I have prepared my dinner. All things are ready. Come to the wedding feast!’” The wedding feast was ready!
The king had made good food for everyone, with lots of meat. Can you show me a big table full of food? Spread your arms wide! Yum, yum!
But the guests made light of it. That means they acted like it was nothing special. One went off to his farm. Another went off to his shop. They had other things to do. The first time, they would not come. The second time, they still would not come. Some were even mean to the king’s servants. And the king heard about it.
The king was angry. He said to his servants, “The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy.” That means they did not deserve to come. The wedding feast was ready!
Then the king said, “Go to the intersections of the highways. As many as you may find, invite to the wedding feast.” Highways are big roads. Intersections are places where many roads meet. Lots of people walk by there.
So the servants went out to the roads. They called everyone they found. Let’s call like the servants: Come! Come to the feast! Can you wave your hand to call someone in?
The king did not give up. He wanted his wedding hall to be full. Who do you think came? Maybe people who were walking by. Maybe people who had never been to a king’s house before.
The servants gathered everyone they found, both bad and good. That means people who did wrong things. And people who did right things. All of them were invited! The wedding feast was ready!
They all came in. Soon the big hall was full. The wedding was filled with guests. Let’s count the guests: one, two, three, four, five… too many to count! The feast could begin!
God invites everyone to come to him. And that means you too. His feast is ready, and there is a place for you. The wedding feast was ready!
3. Talk together (3 min)

Dear God, thank you for inviting everyone to come to you. Thank you for inviting me too. Amen.

Big idea: Everyone is invited
Memory verse: “Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the wedding feast.” — Matthew 22:9 · WEB
The Bible story
A great king throws the biggest wedding feast ever, and when the invited guests stay away, he sends his servants to fill his hall with everyone they can find!
Talk about it
- Who told this story? — Jesus
- What special event was the king preparing? — His son's wedding feast
- What did the king's servants tell the invited guests? — Come, the feast is ready!
- How did the first invited guests respond? — They refused to come
- Where did one invited guest go instead of the feast? — To his field
- What did the king tell his servants to do next? — Invite anyone they could find
Where is Jesus in this story?
Jesus said the king gave this wedding feast for his son (Matthew 22:2). Jesus is that Son, and John the Baptist called him the bridegroom (John 3:29). The guest without wedding clothes reminds us we can't come in our own way. Jesus gives us clean clothes to wear: the Bible says those who belong to him are clothed with Christ (Galatians 3:27).
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us that God's love is like a wide-open door. The king did not only invite important or perfect people. He invited everyone he could find, and he was happiest when his house was full. God feels the same way about you. No matter who you are or where you come from, God wants you to come close to Him and share in His joy. All we have to do is happily say yes and come.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for inviting me to come close to You. Thank You that You want everyone at Your table and that nobody is left out. Help me to happily say yes to You and to invite others too. Amen.
