Zephaniah — God Sings Over His People Preschool Lesson
Preschool lesson (ages 3–6, 20 minutes)
1. Welcome (3 min)
Sit in a circle, greet every child by name and show one thing from the story to touch.
2. The little story (5 min)
Teach the refrain first: “God sings over his people with joy.”
Zephaniah was a prophet – a man who tells God’s words. He lived in the days when Josiah was king. He brought God’s words to the city of Jerusalem. Many people there did not listen to God. They did not trust in the LORD. They did not come near to him.
So Zephaniah told them, “Seek the LORD.” Seek means to look for. He said, “Seek humility.” Humility means not thinking you are better than others. Come back to God!
Then God gave Zephaniah a happy message about a new day that was coming. In that day, people would call on the LORD’s name. They would serve him “shoulder to shoulder” – side by side, all together. Can you stand shoulder to shoulder with someone you love?
God said people would come from far away, from beyond the great rivers. They would bring gifts to God.
God said his people would be humble. They would not do wrong, and they would not tell lies. God said, “They will feed and lie down. No one will make them afraid.” They would be like little sheep. Sheep eat their grass, and then they lie down to rest.
Then Zephaniah said, “Sing, daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart.” Zion is another name for Jerusalem. The daughter of Zion means the people who live there. Can you clap your hands and cheer? Hooray!
Zephaniah said, “He has thrown out your enemy. The King of Israel, the LORD, is among you. You will not be afraid of evil any more.” Among you means right there with you.
He said, “Don’t be afraid, Zion. Don’t let your hands be weak.” Can you make strong hands? Squeeze them tight!
Then Zephaniah said the most wonderful thing. “The LORD, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Mighty means very, very strong. Rejoice means to be very glad. And calm means quiet and peaceful, like a soft song at bedtime. God sings! God sings over his people with joy.
Can you hum a soft, quiet song? Hmm, hmm, hmm.
God said, “I will save those who are lame and gather those who were driven away.” Lame means not able to walk well. Driven away means sent far from home. God sings over his people with joy.
God said, “At that time I will bring you in. At that time I will gather you.” Everyone who was far away would come home again.
God said he would give his people honor. Honor means everyone sees that they are special to God. God said they would see it with their own eyes. God sings over his people with joy.
The LORD is with his people, and he is glad over them. He is near when they lie down to sleep. So when you lie down tonight, you can think of it: God is near, and he is glad. God sings over his people with joy.

Where is Jesus in this story?
Zephaniah promised that God would come close to His people to save them and fill them with joy. Years later, that promise came true in a very special way when Jesus came to earth. Jesus is God with us, the mighty Savior who welcomes every wanderer home. Just as Zephaniah said God sings over His people, Jesus told a story about how heaven throws a joyful party when even one lost child comes back to God. His love is the happy song that never ends.
What God wants to tell us
This story shows us something wonderful about God's heart. He does not only put up with us or watch us from far away. He truly delights in us, His children, and He is so happy about us that He sings! Even when we make mistakes or wander off, God is always ready to welcome us back with open arms and a joyful song. You never have to earn His love. You are already loved, right now, exactly as you are.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You love me so much that You sing happy songs over me. Help me to remember that I am Your treasured child, even on hard days. Thank You for always welcoming me home with open arms. I love You too. Amen.
